Thanks for the post. The article pointed out an interesting piece of history while outlining what could be considered a lack of historical awareness in modern American society.

One could attribute some of the current choices made by the American public as suggestive of a lack of awareness of our own history and culture. In today's mainstream culture it is not difficult to find examples indicative of a lack of understanding of our own past as a country. The example used by the author of Jay Leno's skit "Jaywalking" is but one of many all too common instances of a generation not simply uneducated on its own past but also disinterested in it. It is unfortunate that so many know so little of where we've been. I would personally like to see more emphasis but on our history and common identity as a nation.

This was an exceptional post. Thank you Pete.
It is disgusting how little people know about history, or even about the "war on terror". I wonder how many people even realize how far back America's involvement in it goes. It is much further back than 9/11.
I don't know, I think that one of the military branches has something about it in a song.;)

Great Post!
I happen to live here on the beautiful island of Malta (for the past 5 years) and my wife is Maltese. They are a great people of unshakeable Christian faith. Every summer there are numerous feasts called Festas in each village to celebrate their villages' respective saints. Each village tries to outdo each other with fireworks diplays throughout the day and night supposedly in honor of the Great Siege of 1565. The island, although only about the size of a large county has a deep history. Another piece of Maltese history most people are unaware of is that supposedly more bombs were dropped on this tiny island during WWII than any other country involved in the war including Britain & Germany!

Thank you for the post Pete. Very sobering. As I reflect on the lesson plans handed down through the years of the public school system, I cannot recall one mention of Malta. That disgusts me. The article makes me proud of being a Soldier by having the ability to do my part in preserving our birthright of freedom that others paid the price for, then and now.

Pete, thank for sharing that with us. I love reading about history.

"Are you a Christian? Are you a man of the West? All of this is your history. Without it, you are what the conspiracy for world government wants. You are a Jay Leno interviewee, a giggling ignoramus, reveling in your ignorance, a parasite ripe for extortion and conquest, brainwashed to be exactly that in the nation’s communist government schools. You don’t know who and what you are; so you are nothing."

Love that last paragraph!

Mixed feeling over the article. Does the author suggest that we cannot coexist peacefully with the Muslim, and that Christendom should be the ultimate goal? Wouldn't that be the same as going jihad or becoming shaheed?

We criticize the Islamic world saying that they still live in the crusade time frame, and from the "are we at war with Islam" thread, the general consensus is "Islam is at war with us." Yet, I got the vibe that the article suggest more than just knowing history, but clinging to history as an inescapable endless vicious cycle and that it's futile/ignorant to move on, forgive n forget usw. :boohoo

The Sicilian side of my family says forgive but never forget. I don't believe remembering history is "clinging" to it. To paraphrase an old truth, if we forget it...or ignore it...we are doomed to repeat it.

I don't think that Chrisianity is the "goal" of the article...while many people can coexist peacefully with others of differing religions, the players of islamic extremism don't seem interested in going along with that game. The problem I have is the "moderates" don't seem terribly interested in speaking up.

There was an old saying "back in the day"...if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem. ;)

Frost: No, IMMHO, I do not think he is suggesting that. We have seen that here in the US, we have been most tolerant of them and their religion. However, we also see that they are not as tolerant of us and ours. And in extreme cases, and there are many, they are downright violent! We know what the ultimate goal is in Islam. Christians and other religions are not about to go "jihad" as it is not part of our religions. If that were the case, then Muslims coming to this country would have been sucking wind from the beginning. Christendom is NOT the goal; however, knowing one's history and that of others is extremely important, as history does repeat itself over and over. I am not advocating living in history as that is counter-productive but knowing it is very beneficial.
I have many friends with school age children and I raised two stepsons, I was shocked at how much HISTORY is being left out in the school system, much of it American history and of course, "those really "yucky" unmentionable aspects of world history that provde many lessons to learn for future conduct. Learning from the successes and failures of the past are important lessons, just as our own success and failures are important to the type of adults we become later on in life.

Gypsy: THAT saying is an oldie but goodie... and needs to be brought back into good use! Get the movement started!

I agree with sg ^.

The author had a very distinct point of view and message. I liked the article for it's historic value - just like listening to NPR for the news... you have to know when to remove the bias from the facts.
