Looking for some pointers from someone tech smart...

I'm stuck with a CAT 5 cable to get online...my wireless is broke.

Weird facts that confuse the issue:
- Our nanny has a wireless laptop that works off the same router...no issues.
- Our desktop runs off the router via cat 5 cable...no issues.
- Service repair guy just tested router and said there's no issues.
- Service repair guy said we should be able to run 4 computers off the router before one gets bumped off.
- My laptop runs off the cat 5 no issues.
- My laptop will "pick up" wireless networks. Even lists them as being available/connected.

- Here's the issue: When I click on Internet Explorer, it comes up as unable to connect.

- Asked geek Squad for advice: they said it could be spyware, coul be issue with Norton.
- Just added Web Root Spy Sweeper and removed 45 spy cookies.
- Still no joy.

Any ideas??

Download firefox and see if it works with that. You need to eliminate the software package from the equation.

Just to make sure I understand, Does IE work when you're connected with cat5?

1st do not worry about the 45 spy cookies. They just collect info and will not down your wireless.
2nd Your nanny's is working so you have no wireless problem on the router side. Your problem is on your laptop.......
What type of laptop are you using? Dell/Toughbook/Gateway/etc ????
What is your browser? (IE) I assume that it works with your CAT5 hookup so your problem is not the browser.
If you work on the CAT5 then your firewall is OK, but check to make sure that you do not have any restrictions unique to wireless.
Go to control panel/security center and make sure the advanced has a check in Wireless Network connection. If not check it or add it. This will keep you from connecting.

Now go in to network connections and disable and close, go back in and re-enable. It will think for a minute and the WIFI icon will show that it is seeing your home wireless.

Now depending on what you use to interface with your wireless card you may have to do some different things.

If you have the Intel Pro Set/Wireless icon in the lower right open it. What you will need to do is open it and look at your profiles. Erase the old home profile and do a scan..... Find your home wireless and configure it.... Make sure you do the proper encryption.

Reboot your laptop and go in and detect your WIFI. Check everything and you should be able to get in now. XP is a bugger and gets confused with WIFI and hard line connections. If this does not work I can with the above questions answered give you one more route to fix it Monday.

Good luck
Bryan

Yes...Internet Explorer works fine with Cat 5 cable...just not wireless.

Thanks for the tips. Responses in CAPS so they stand out below...

1st do not worry about the 45 spy cookies. GOOD.

2nd Your nanny's is working so you have no wireless problem on the router side. Your problem is on your laptop....... CHECK.

What type of laptop are you using? Dell/Toughbook/Gateway/etc ???? DELL.

What is your browser? (IE) I assume that it works with your CAT5 hookup so your problem is not the browser. IE. ROGER.

If you work on the CAT5 then your firewall is OK, but check to make sure that you do not have any restrictions unique to wireless. Go to control panel/security center and make sure the advanced has a check in Wireless Network connection. If not check it or add it. This will keep you from connecting. COULD NOT FIND WIRELESS NETWORK BLOCK TO HEK OR UNCHECK IN ADVANCED.

Now go in to network connections and disable and close, go back in and re-enable. It will think for a minute and the WIFI icon will show that it is seeing your home wireless.

WM,

Had this problem here in Astan...I fixed by checking my guys' stuff to make sure there was no security ie WEP or some other form highlighted in the wireless config. Go figure the delta has to fix commo :) If the router is just used as an open network just make sure you don't have your wireless configs trying to use wep or something like that. That should solve the problem...if not pm me and I'll try and get back to you! Good luck!

Might be seen as character development. :D
Until he took his commission, the delta on my first team was also my jr echo.
We were some what short handed...
Might have had a positive effect as he will soon make O-6! :lifter

Depending on a number of factors, your Dell may have their proprietary wireless connection software called, I believe, "Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility". On my laptop, it takes precedence over the normal Windows wireless connection protocol. If you try to go through the standard Windows interface to connect to a wireless network, it will give you an error message. On mine, there is a small icon of five bars (like a cell phone signal icon) in the lower right hand corner (next to the clock) that will enable me to access the Dell software for the wireless connection. If you double click it, it will open the utility, which has all the controls you need to detect wireless networks, connect, set passwords, etc.

Hope this helps.

Just a guess but since other laptops are working over the same router try your wireless drivers and the program that runs your wireless card. Depending on your OP you can ctrl. alt. del. to see if they are running properly and maybe what is interfering(right click view_options_not running) and also to make sure you did not mistakingly block your connection.
(security too high)

Hope this helps.
