Sorry but I have a relatively new iPod and so I'm interested in music right now. Name a song (and the band/artist that performs it) that is not widely known but is really good.
Again, I'll start.
Tremolo, Evil Twin.
Don't pay the Ferry Man by Chris DeBerg
also gotta add....
Run Runaway by Slade

"Jockey full of Bourbon" & "Tango 'til They're Sore" by Tom Waits
Also there's quite a few songs off his album "Real Gone" that I enjoyed.

Homocide - 999 (might be too punk for you)
Nazi Punks Fuck off - Dead Kennedys
Every time I eat Vegetables, it makes me think of you - Ramones
The KKK took my Baby Away - Ramones
21 Guitar Salute - Dropkick Murphys
anything you can find by Asleep at the Wheel (yes, I'm following punk with country) best album IMHO, Collision Course.

Eels - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues

Don't know about how unknown they are, but here's a few I get stuck in my head:
If you're in an aggressive type mood (and don't mind "Cookie Monster" vocals):
"Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste" - Norma Jean
"Through Struggle" - As I Lay Dying
"Walk" - Pantera (known, but a classic)
"Burn" - Throwdown
"Pillars of Eternity" - Down
If you're in a more mellow mood:
"Wiser Time" - The Black Crowes
"Change" - Blind Melon
"Echoes" - Pink Floyd (16 minutes and 30 seconds of sit back and relax)
"Say Goodbye" - Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds
If you're in a spiritual mood:
"King of Glory" - Third Day
"Jesus" - Rich Mullins
"Mothership" - Glisten
How's that for "one end of the spectrum to the other"?

"Belle Starr" by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. I don't know how to categorize the music, but the two voices sound great together. This song is my favorite on a pretty good album, All the Roadrunning.
"Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad" by Matt Dusk. Bono originally wrote this song for Frank Sinatra. It was the theme song for the short-lived reality show, "The Casino," which also featured Dusk. Dusk is a classically-trained Canadian singer turned crooner. Michael Bublé is a bigger star, but I like Dusk more - he has more of an edge to his voice and music. Dusk's debut album, Two Shots, is pretty good. Track 6, "Don't Go Looking," was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a great song.

I know this is blasphemy here, but this song is too mellow for my tastes. Were I to jump out of an airplane, I'd prepare with Ted Nugent's Craveman.
Sunset Rubdown - They took a vote and said No. (This song always reminds me of my Iraq experience, and anyone who has been there will know why.)
I'd also recommend the first 2 Slowdive albums (Just for a Day, and Soulvaki), and I cant isolate it to one song, because, their best listened to as whole albums.

8th of November by Big & Rich.
Or any of the MANY patriotic songs in the country genre.
Loretta Lynn - The entire Van Lear Rose disc, particularly Portland, Oregon
It's a collaboration with a guy Jack White, from White Stripes - very gritty marriage of garage band and honky tonk. The woman rocks! I hope I'm like her when I hit my 70's.
This led me to exploring White Stripes' work. I'd recommend Blue Orchid, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, and their cover of Jolene.
Yo Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor - Appalachia Waltz disc

"Crazy" and "One in a Million" - Guns n' Roses (GnR Lies "B Side" acoustic version)(Don't let the word "acoustic" fool you. It's still pretty intense)
"Vermillion" - Slipknot
"F**king Hostile" - Pantera (use sparingly and away from people)
"Bottom" - Tool
To counteract, yet stay in a somewhat dark mood:
"Rooster" and "Frogs"- Alice in Chains (MTV Unplugged album - one of the best in my opinion)
To just get plain weird for a little while:
"Hamburger Train" - Primus (okay, anything by Primus would qualify. But Les Claypool is the man)

Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack by Klaus Badelt: "He's a Pirate"

Pilgrimage, Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile: When listening to this, try not to imagine Flying Monkeys from Oz marching at a Nuremberg torchlight rally. Seriously weird ("If you have to listen to that, please use your iPod!")
Just Like You Imagined, Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile: This will get you out of the plane door and looking for something to kill with your teeth when you land. I hate it when one of my favorite songs ends up in a commercial. The good news is when the commercial is for the movie 300.
Hurt, Johnny Cash, American IV: a cover of NIN by the master. Not really unknown, but gotta have.
Cold Cold Cold/Tripe Face Boogie, Little Feat, Feats Don't Fail Me Now: Any Little Feat album is good, actually.
St. Teresa, Joan Osborne, Relish: I just like her voice, and it's a poignant song.
Angel from Montgomery, John Prine, Souvenirs: What ever happened to John Prine?
Acid Killer, Infected Mushroom, Isra-Aliens: Techno. Well, it's certainly unknown. Great workout music.
When I Touch You, Spirit, The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus: moldy oldie, but still good.
Can't Find My Way Home, Blind Faith, Blind Faith
I Can't Make You Love Me, Bonnie Raitt, (I have this on a compilation album): Whew, one of the best heartbreak songs ever written (and perfect grammar - no "him and me" for Bonnie)
Moonlight Mile, The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers: never a hit but one of my favorite Stones songs.
The Shins, Wincing the Night Away: If you're trying to keep up with the 21st Century. The Daughter listens to this and its OK. Pop-Pink Floyd.

Lucero- Good bourbon drinkin' music. A bunch of old punk rock guys that started a country band. I recommend "The War"- A song about his grandfather's experience in WWII.
Jesse Cook - good guitar player (flamenco)
Looking at these groups and song titles Ill have to admit, Ive passed up being "Well Seasoned" and am admittedly Very Old. Im toatally lost. Keep in mind that my musical preferences do not go back to The Ink Spots or The Dorsey Brothers. But, does pre date Band of Gypsys and Big Brother & the Holding Company.

King Crimson has had a large enough cult following to keep them successful for the 30+ years they've been active, but otherwise you won't hear much about them. They tend to be experimental, so you may love one song and hate the next.
Sleepless, Frame By Frame, Discipline, Another Red Nightmare, and Starless are a few of my all-time favorites.

Jonny Lang - anything. For starters, try the songs "Give Me Up Again" and "Red Light" from the "Long Time Coming" CD. He is a young guy with a old blues voice. Really amazing.
Also, if you've seen the movie "Lord of War" with Nicholas Cage, the entire soundtrack is great. It's an original composition.
Additionally, try Citizen Cope, and (I saw this earlier, but I definitely second it) Ray LaMontagne. One of the most original vocalists alive. Try the song "Trouble" and his cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." Both Ray LaMontagne and Damien Rice are good "gettin' it on" music.
If you have any more targeted requests in any genre, please let me know. I'd be happy to help.
For those with a penchant for The Pogues and Flogging Molly, the recent release by the Young Dubliners, "With All Due Respect", is a good choice, as is Great Big Sea's "Courage & Patience & Grit". The Young Dubliners' renditions of "The Leaving of Liverpool" and "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" are personal favorites from that CD.

You know I got to see them live when I was in Japan. It was a pretty rockin' show.

Adajio for Strings:
DJ Tiesto - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5xjIpsHVYQ)
Possibly DJ Stimulant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjqTTWA4hBw) (And No XXX No I do not do "X" :D, this is the music of Asia :p (and a number of clubs in the Midwest))
Technically - Bond could not be considered an "Unknown", as you can buy their albums at major commercial stores (much like DJ Tiesto) however, compared to the number of people who do know of them (much less Rondo Veneziano) they are relatively "Unknown")

Recent stuff I've been listening to:
TV On the Radio: Wolf Like Me
Anberlin: Adelaide
Cold War Kids: Hang me out to Dry
And any speed metal is good to go.
I just stumbled upon The Bands' "The Last Waltz" on VH1 the other nite....wow, what great memories and music. It was great to hear that concert again. It was sort of a documentary on their "last waltz".
I saw they had the CD's online at Wal-Mart, i HAD to order one, should be here next week

I thought this would be a good place for this tune. Unknown to me, but something familiar, yet old and new again. They appear to be enjoying them selves.

I've always been fan of sountracks. Great soundtracks have been made for movies, and even for video games. Never knew the game and still don't care thereafter, but some serious work must have gone to it.
Arnhem Knights by Michael Giacchino, here effectively used to Saving Private Ryan clip. Wait for the crescendo

This is a live performance of "Big White Gate" by Grace Potter and The Nocturnals which recently aired on the excellent all HD commercial free cable channel RAVE-HD. The song, written for her grandmother, is from the Nocturnals new album "This Is Somewhere" on Hollywood Records. Well worth purchasing, as there is not a bad song on it. (Not my comment)
Big White Gate lyrics:
My body's acing from laying in this bed,
I went singing in the rain and the cold got to my head.
I don't know who's paying I just know what the doctor said,
84 years of a sinning life and in the morning I'll be dead.
I had three daughters,
A new man for every one.
The only man that I ever loved,
Left me with my only son.
I was a no good mother,
I was a no good wife,
There's only one thing that I did right in this godforsaken life.
Saint Peter won't you open up the big white gate,
Cause I heard about forgiveness and I hope it ain't too late.
I ain't no holy roller but you go tell your king,
That all the folks up in heaven might like to hear me sing.
I sang to my children,
Before they strayed so far.
I sang for my lovers,
Or a nickel in a tip jar.
I never knew Jesus,
I never read the good book.
But on my day of dying,
I'm giving life a second look.
Saint Peter won't you open up the big white gate,
Cause I heard about forgiveness and I hope it ain't too late.
I ain't no holy roller but you go tell your king,
That all the folks up in heaven might like to hear me sing.
It's coming on time now,
My body's getting cold.
I've got no will I've got no prayer,
My story's all been told.
I'm ready for the land of fire,
But I'd love to see the land of gold.
So nurse bring me my guitar,
One more song before I go.

My most favourite artist, Brooke Frazer, we went to the same church, and she hasn't let her local fame go to her head, very humble and telented young lass.
I think you'll love her stuff.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
"I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrough ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well, maybe I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live with Leonard before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath you drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
And maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
Well it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Halle...
It's not what you're told
It's not her face
It's not his touch
In the room you both share
Where he's gone when he loved
When your time and your memory fills your dreams
When you're honest and together
Together no more
No more
Hallelujah, until you're nothing
Hallelujah, baby, until she's everywhere
Hallelujah, until together you are somewhere I'd lost
Hallelujah, Hallelujah."

Had a roommate when I was at Bragg...a real guitar-guy (This is back in the 80's now) he had several artist's albums but I still find Dweezil Zappa's and Yngwie Malmsteen's guitar work pretty entertaining to listen to if you want some electric instrumental. Perhaps a little less known than Steve Vai or Joe Satriaini
Sometimes I just pull up the guitar duel from "Crossroads" for fun :D
