Sad news, his wife is from Eugene Oregon.

There was an Australian jellyfish expert on the news tonight explaining the jellyfish barbs. He got stung with a little one (showed the size), it took 5 shots of morphine over 3 hours and he still didn't feel any relief. The he showed the one about the size that hit Irwin. Poor bastard must have been in a world of agony.

I also saw in a report that the stingray barb may have pierced his heart. Poor guy didn't stand a chance.
I loved watching Croc Hunter. He did a lot of good things for animal awareness, and was great for Australia. He will be terribly missed.

This was the report I read as well...
Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time....Collin said he suspected Irwin died because the barb pierced under his ribcage and directly into his heart
Really is a shame...he had done a LOT of kooky stuff over his years. I guess it finally caught up with him.:(
Rest in Peace Croc Hunter.

Really sad. A couple months back I was watching him and said to my wife that he gets to close to the edge and that it was going to catch up with him one day. I guess it did. Still very sad.

Steve Irwin led an amazing life before the tv shows, whatever he did, he came by it honestly.
When he was on tv I stopped everything to watch.
Did I learn anything? Yes. Do not mess with snakes or Australian crocs.
RIP Steve.

Have to agree.
I am pretty sure it will never be shown, but considering that the maximum length for a stingray barb is ten inches, how close do you think he was to have it put the barb directly into his heart?
My kids are in mourning though. RIP Steve. Thanks for the entertainment. Condolences out to Terri, Bindy, and Bob.

I really enjoyed watching his early stuff. When I was young I used to take my kids out into the desert, we would catch snakes, all kinds, Tarantulas, Scorpions, anything that raised our heartrate. My kids still talk about the good times we had...
But that man did things I wound not consider doing, he completely raised the bar! I'll miss him! We spent 30 days in Australia a few years ago, I really wanted to link up with him, it did not happen we toured wine growing regions instead.
Rest In Peace, Steve!
An awful way to die...but he died loving what he was doing. RIP Mr. Irwin.

He sure raised my awareness of dangerous animals in places I'd love to visit. Rest in peace my good man, rest in peace.

A particularly bad way to die. He will be missed. In spite of/because of his antics, he was able to reach and educate a worldwide audience. His passion for the animals and environment was contagious. He was also a better goodwill ambassador for Australia than anything/anybody else in recent memory. My condolences and best wishes to his family. Peregrino

My kids and I have dived with sting rays often, sometimes swarms of them. While the barb is short it's on the underside of the whip-like tail. I've seen large rays snap their tail up and back and hit nurse sharks 2-3 feet above them. It's shocking to see the speed at which they strike.
Rays are about as aggressive as pet rabbits when they are in the open and seem to enjoy being stroked -- their skin feels like silk. But that tail evolved as a defensive measure for use when predators nosed around them when they were buried in the sand. My guess is Irwin was directly above the buried ray and gave it a poke in order to get a shot of it un-assing from the sand.
Sad day. He influenced a lot of kids to respect all life. He had such a nice family.

News reports say Irwin was directly above a free-swimming 6-foot bull, the cameraman was in front of it, and it probably felt cornered.

I wish I had a nickel for every hour my kids and I watched the "Croc Hunter" Steve Irwin and a penny for every smile and every question my kids asked.
My deepest Condolences to Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin.
Thank you Steve, the world will not be the same without you.

Steve Irwin had such a good nature and humor about him, charismatic and totally confident. His work and entertainment are gold, I loved watching his show.
God bless you Steve, Terri, Bindi, and Bob, rest in peace.

When I heard about this I was truly dissappointed. I rarely give a second thought when celebrities pass away, but this guy had my respect. I also gotta mention the term Crikey (sp?). I know that every time I hear the phrase I'm going to smile and think of this guy. Thanks for everything you did Steve. You'll be missed.

I grew up watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, my kids watch Steve and his crew. It is one of a few shows that brings our whole family piling into the living room to watch, and we learn something in each episode.
You'll be sorely missed, Steve. Rest in Peace.
My condolences to Terri, Bindy and Bob.
What a shock it was, to read this, this morning.
As has been said here several times, he went out doing what he loved most. It would have been even a bigger tragedy had he been taken out by that other animal that he interacted with on a daily basis....people/humans.
Steve was doing what he loved most, educating us on the wonders and insights of the other creatures, that share this planet with us. He educated kids (and us adults) through his crazy/zany way. As has been said also, it was always fun to watch what this crazy SOB was going to do next. But you know something.....watching his crazy ways of doing things, YOU LEARNED !!!!!
Thoughts of course go out to his wife Terri and his kids, Bindi and Bob. But mostly thoughts go out to the people in OZ (Australia). He was one hell of an ambassador for your country. He showed the wonders and harshness of the bush and reefs of that country.
A lot of Aussies thought of him as an embarrassment.

Those who do nothing always have the luxury of criticizing those who try.
Steve Irwin's greater good far eclipsed how he got the worlds attention.

You could do a lot worse.
Ask an American to name an Aussie, 9 out of 10 will name Steve Irwin. Next closest would probably be Paul Hogan, more can probably identify either of them than the PM.
He has done a lot to promote the country, my daughter was saving her allowance to go to the Australia Zoo.

RIP Steve - educational and entertaining - I can just hear him as it happened (speaking into regulator) "Crikey, that smarts!" the man always said the same thing when he got 'nipped' by a critter....

TR, last night I watched an interview with a friend of Mr. Irwin's and the gentleman sounded pretty certain that his wife carry on with the zoo etc...

As I read over this tread it covered just about every thought I had as I watched the story unfold.
As quoted by William Wallace in Braveheart; "All men die, but not all men TRULY live" Steve truled lived.
Thanks Steve
God Bless you Terri, Bindi, Robert, & Bob Irwin.

This is a article about Terri addressing the zoo staff. There are several other article links on the top right of this sight.
Yesterday I heard Steve's father talk about the possibility of the family turning down the offer of a state funeral, saying "Steve would have wanted to be remembered as an ordinary bloke". After hearing that I thought how odd that he died on our celebration of Labor Day (Labor Day is on the first Monday in May in Queensland (May Day in the Northern Territory). Anyway the articles are good reading.
Thanks for the articles NSDQ.
Zoo staff have suggested the shrine be moved inside the zoo and made a permanent fixture.
Seems a fitting tribute.

RIP Steve. Like others here my age, I remember watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Steve's show reminded me alot of that show, and I really enjoyed watching him in action.
