I remember in 1965 or so, my father gave me his Marine Corps issue survival kit when I was active in the Boy Scouts. Dad had brought it back from Viet Nam (apparently it was an expendable item). But first, he opened the two cloudy plastic halves, just the right size to fit in an ammo pouch, and pulled out a packet of pills and threw them in the trash.
He said they were emergency use only "pep pills."
And I asked him why he didn't keep them in case he needed extra "pep," and he said:
"Because it makes your body stay awake but your mind goes to sleep."
or maybe it was
"Your mind stays awake but your body goes to sleep."
Can't remember.
