Sheriff's deputies shot, suspect wounded in SWAT incident near Dixon, Illinois

Here's the "Red Flag" law(s) in action.

Instead of just "waiting out" the individual and talking/negotiating with him, these guys decided to show off their post 9/11 "Gucci Gear", just to justify their budget.

Quote:
Three Illinois sheriff's deputies were shot and a suspect wounded in a SWAT incident Wednesday near Dixon.

The Ogle County Sheriff's Department confirmed it was called to a home just before 9 a.m. in the 400 block of Wild Rice Lane after a family remember expressed concern for a resident living at the address.

"This individual had threatened not only suicide, but homicide," Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

A SWAT team was activated at the scene shortly after officers arrived, but after hours of failed attempts and over 50 unanswered calls to the resident inside, deputies in an "emergency response team" entered the home, VanVickle said.

That's when gunfire erupted.

"Immediately upon entering the house, deputies received fire," VanVickle told reporters shortly after the incident unfolded.

Three deputies were shot along with a suspect inside the home. All were transported to area hospitals, with medical helicopters and ambulances called to the scene.

According to the Ogle County Sheriff's Office, one officer was shot in the armor, one officer was shot in the upper arm and another officer was struck in the face.

Two officers were hospitalized, treated and later released, while the other officer was flown to OSF St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford and underwent surgery this evening.

The suspect, Jonathan G. Gounaris, was located inside with multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor. He was later taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. ... Umm ... Here's hoping no one looks through my stuff.

A heavy police presence was reported in the area where the incident occurred. Authorities noted that officers and first responders from surrounding towns, counties and from Illinois State Police were all at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.

This is what Illinois has become.

Quote:
Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock has filed Attempted First Degree Murder charges against Jonathon Gounaris (DOB 5/13/1992) following an incident that left three Ogle County law enforcement officers injured.

The charges stem from a 12-count information filed in connection with the shooting on June 12, 2024, when officers responded to a residence in Lost Nation after reports of a suicidal threat.

Gounaris faces multiple charges, including 4 counts of Attempt First Degree Murder, 3 counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, 3 counts of Aggravated Battery, and 2 counts of Possession of a Firearm Without a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card.

According to authorities, upon entering the residence, officers and the suspect sustained gunshot wounds. An investigation conducted by the Illinois State Police was subsequently reviewed by the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Attempt First Degree Murder is classified as a Class X Felony in Illinois, carrying a potential sentence of 20-80 years in the Department of Corrections, followed by 3 years of Mandatory Supervised Release. Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Aggravated Battery also carry Class X Felony charges, with potential sentences ranging from 10-60 years.

Possession of a Firearm Without a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card, a Class 3 Felony, carries a sentence of 2-5 years in the Department of Corrections, followed by 6 months of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Gounaris has been arrested on a no bond warrant and is set to appear in the Ogle County Judicial Center on June 20, 2024.

Communist Illinois. It's a shame that the good people who live in most of the state have to be controlled and persecuted by the commies in Cook County.

I just spent last week on a work trip to Southern Illinois. I couldn’t help but notice that they almost seemed to stress the word southern in their signage. Almost seems like they were trying to secede from the northern part of the state. ??

Pretty much anything south of I-64 is Northern Kentucky, between I-74 and I-64 is Western Indiana or Eastern Missouri, and anything north of I-74 is Chicago. If cook-county fell into Lake Michigan, illinois would be a decent place to drive through and that’s about it. Keep in mind, I was born and went to school in a little town near Peoria…. There’s a few good reasons I joined the Army on my 17th birthday, but leaving ill-annoy is on the top of that list.

The paternal side of my family is from southern Illinois, and my father lived there until age 15.
Its culture has (or at least, had…) many similarities to the southern US.

It's not just Chicago vs. the rest of Illinois. The urban/rural divide is evident in pretty much every state. Austin is certainly out of tune with the rest of Texas. Atlanta with the rest of Georgia. Virginia trended away from being a red state because of the growth of the DC suburbs where so many suckle on the government teat.

Didn't another eastern Oregon county recently join with the movement to secede from the Portland-dominated west?

Believe you're right about this last item; can't recall which one.

WI is the same way as most other states, where often a couple of metro-hives will somewhat drive policy directions. Milwaukee proper, and Dane Country (Madison), are the 2 main bastions of far-left to full-on Marxist thought. In a town that has a UW campus branch the conservative voice is that much diluted. The rest of the state is pretty red. Fickle - elect Scott Walker 3 times, but go nationally for Obama twice. To the topic, some cities in WI view everything in policing as solving a tactical problem. Others like my town < 10K has a PD that view themselves as largely "Peace Officers" - the difference in attitude is stark in the relationships between the citizenry and their police.

The tyranny of 'true' democracy--the majority (large population concentrations) is rarely interested in being altruistic towards the interests of the minority (rural populations).
