Gunfight Rules
RULES FOR GUNFIGHTS BY THE UNITED STATES MILITARY:
PLEASE NOTE: The reason "Special Forces Rules for Gunfights" is conspicuously absent from the list below is because, "THERE ARE NO KNOWN SPECIAL FORCES RULES IN AND FOR A GUNFIGHT..."
US Marine Corps Rules for Gunfights
1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
2. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.
3. Have a plan.
4. Have a back-up plan, because the first one probably won't work.
5. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
6. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a "4."
7. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
8. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral & diagonal preferred.)
9. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
10. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. In ten years, nobody will remember the caliber, stance, or tactics.
They will remember who lived.
13. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating.
Navy SEAL Rules For Gunfights
1. Look very cool in sunglasses.
2. Kill every living thing within view.
3. Return quickly to looking cool in latest beach wear.
4. Check hair in mirror.
US Army Ranger Rules For Gunfights
1. Walk in 50 miles wearing 75 pound ruck while starving.
2. Locate individuals requiring killing.
3. Request permission via radio from "Higher" to perform killing.
4. Curse bitterly when mission is aborted.
5. Walk out 50 miles wearing a 75 pound ruck while starving.
Army Grunt Rules For Gunfights
1. Select a new beret to wear
2. Sew combat patch on right shoulder
3. Change the color of beret you decide to wear
US Air Force Rules For Gunfights
1. Have a cocktail
2. Adjust temperature on air-conditioner
3. See what's on HBO
4. Attempt to determine "what is a gunfight"
5. Request more funding from Congress with a "killer" Power Point presentation
6. Wine & dine 'key' Congressmen, invite DOD & defense industry executives
7. Receive funding, set up new command and assemble assets
8. Declare the assets "strategic" and never deploy them operationally
9. Tell the Navy to send the Marines
US Navy Rules For Gunfights
1. Go to Sea
2. Drink Coffee
3. Watch porn
4. Send in the Marines

I don't like # 8 on the first set.

Because... Because using time to create distance could be at too big an opportunity cost? (i.e., other things are more important)

Sir it could be hazardous to your shins to teach me something without revealing the full implications! I am wayyy too influenceable for that! One sentence uttered by someone was enough to cause me to question a conclusion I had which in term sent me into a totally absorbing mission for the past 2 years!
Now you had better PM me with the full implications of that usage! Keep in mind that my parents restricted my television viewing to The Math Network, and I've spent most of my life since school on a plane or in another classroom (including 1 class in the school of hard knocks!) I had to ask someone what was the reference to the "2 men enter, 1 leaves" thing that NDD said. I thought it was a common drill that I missed out on in all these classes!
re: Gunfight rules
How 'bout simply:
"Bring a gun"
Though for that list, everyone already has one by default.
I **really** like that one, because it seems so many people get guns that are wayyyy too big to be comfortable to carry, then they leave them in the safe instead of being prepared.
In a grocery store, I ran into one of the LEOs and competitive shooters that I did Tuesday evening drills with before I moved. He was off duty and I didn't think was carrying. So I lightly frisked him and tapped the inside of his ankles with my foot.
Then I told him in priss mode,
It's OK. _You_ can call 911. _I'll_ take the door.
and of course later declared that he owed me a box of 9mm FMJ.

NDD,
We just had a lengthy discussion about that very topic. This was a topic of much contention.
You are a proponent of the "take the fight to them" school of thought???
Please elaborate if you don't mind.
Thanks

Negative.
Bring TWO guns, preferably one of them a LONG gun!
Remember, with anything essential, two is one, and one is none.
And as wise men have said, the purpose of a pistol is to fight your way back to where you left your real gun.

There's just something to "close with and destroy the enemy by fire, close combat and counterattack" that has an appeal to it.

#8 sure isn't a Marine Corps rule... "locate, CLOSE WITH and destroy the enemy" is the mission of Marines.
And I'm particularly partial to #11.

Time for a tastybreak. You "frisked" this guy in a grocery store? Since it has been termed a "light" frisk have you considered he may have had a smaller caliber weapon available in a "strategically" placed holster? Perhaps his declaration was a result of the excitement of your Terry stop.

Rules for Gunfights
Gentlemen,
These Gunfight Rules have been floating around the Internet for a long time. I believe they were first attributed to Clint Smith at Thunder Ranch. This would explain Rule #8. Clint teaches his students to maximize the distance. Most of his students are LEO and civilians and this may be a good plan for them.
Most military units would close and destroy.

Sure it's a "necrothread" but what the heck...
I've been a big fan of the "Tao of Capt. Lewis" for a long time : "Suspects are far more cooperative with a gun screwed into their eye socket. It helps with shot placement too."

Yep. Sure did. Near the veggie section.

Negative. It was a pride thing. The only excuse for going unarmed is, "I was going to buy stamps." I was armed. He wasn't. He is an LEO. I am a mere civilian.
Context is relevant: I was much more accurate then he was, which I think he found slightly embarassing because several months prior I didn't know how to shoot. However, he was faster and accurate enough, so he'd win (based on scoring) in the training drills.
Therefore, my catching him **unarmed** in a store, was a big deal.

Sir Googles, while he may have enjoyed the light frisk and ankle taps, judging by how flushed he got, he knew he had just been served.
