Montreal Police Seize Explosives, Weapons From Van, CP Reports
Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Montreal police seized a cache of explosives, submachine guns, rifles and handguns Tuesday from a parked minivan in the city's downtown area, and authorities suspect the weapons are connected to organized-crime gangs, the Canadian Press reported.
The seizure tied up traffic downtown for several hours and forced the evacuation of about 300 people from a building that houses the Costa Rica and Panama consulates, the news agency said. Police don't believe the consulates were targets or the explosives were linked to terrorism.
Police took about 90 to 135 kilograms (198 to 298 pounds) of explosives and 17 weapons from the van. The explosives weren't connected to detonators, Canadian Press said. Police are trying to locate whoever rented the vehicle, it said. National News.
