Egypt's tourism faces meltdown as security fears mount

http://www.france24.com/en/20130816-...ty-fears-mount

"AFP - Egypt's tourist industry was facing meltdown on Friday as foreign governments warned their citizens to stay away and told visitors already there to remain in their hotels.

Fears of nationwide unrest in the wake of a violent crackdown by the military-backed interim government earlier this week have resulted in a string of countries issuing official advice against all but essential travel to Egypt..............."

Reading the article just between Russia, England and Italy there's 109,000 tourists in Egypt - mostly in the resorts off to the SE.

Concur.

And build a 12' chainlink fence with razor wire topping around the country. No gates.

Same deal for Syria.

It now appears to be confirmed.

"The brother of a Ayman al-Zawahri, the veteran terrorist leader of al-Qaeda has been arrested according to Egyptian security forces.
A security official said that Mohammed al-Zawahri, leader of the ultraconservative Jihadi Salafist group, was detained at a checkpoint in Giza, the city across the Nile from Cairo."

Not a very rational crowd, that tourism is suffering over this mess should be no surprise to anyone.

Saudis Warn the West: We Won’t Forget Your Stance on Egypt

Saudis Warn the West: We Won’t Forget Your Stance on Egypt

See more at: http://cnsnews.com/news/article/saud....JTrH8VMa.dpuf

"(CNSNews.com) – In a blunt warning to countries critical of the Egyptian military crackdown and considering suspending aid, longstanding U.S. ally Saudi Arabia suggested that the decisions they make now will have long-term consequences for their relationships in the Arab and Muslim world.

Saudi Arabia has led the way in supporting the Egyptian military’s actions, first in removing the Muslim Brotherhood administration early last month and in its subsequent steps against supporters of the ousted Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi..........."

From the article

Quote:
Asked at a press briefing Monday whether the Obama administration thought Faisal was referring to the United States in his comments, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said she could not “speculate on that.”

“Obviously, every country makes their own decision about whether they’re going to continue to provide aid, what aid they will provide, and we’ve certainly seen that,” she said.

“We’ll make our own decisions here, based on our own national security interests, our own concerns about regional stability. And that review is ongoing.”
The last seems to me a pretty well-crafted vanilla statement - plucked out of the pocket from time to time - and seems an effort to deflect Saudi Arabia basically calling us out for action (or inaction) vis a vis Syria. In this instance, however, it would seem Faisal got his answer. (Then again, this is more complicated than the professor and the Cambridge PD.) I wonder if anyone is reviewing events & advising based on another country from 60 years ago.
