Sisi's Islamist Agenda for Egypt?
Gawly SGT Carter! Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Quote:
Although he has vowed to lead Egypt through a democratic transition, there are plenty of indications that he is less than enthusiastic about democracy and that he intends to hold on to political power himself. But that’s not to say that he envisions a return to the secular authoritarianism of Egypt’s recent past. Given the details of Sisi’s biography and the content of his only published work, a thesis he wrote in 2006 while studying at the U.S. Army War College in Pennsylvania, it seems possible that he might have something altogether different in mind: a hybrid regime that would combine Islamism with militarism. To judge from the ideas about governance that he put forward in his thesis, Sisi might see himself less as a custodian of Egypt’s democratic future than as an Egyptian version of Muhammed Zia ul-Haq, the Pakistani general who seized power in 1977 and set about to “Islamicize” state and society in Pakistan.

At the very least, it would set back the democratic cause immeasurably. It would also reinforce the military’s octopus-like hold on the economy, which is already one of the major obstacles to the country's economic development. And it would also pose new dilemmas for the military itself: somehow it would need to reconcile serving the strategic objectives of Islam and those of its American patrons. It’s not clear whether that circle could be squared. And the experiment would likely come at the expense of the Egyptian people..........."

While not Islamic, China's economy is similarly military dependent - if not outright controlled. Will either learn lessons from the other?

I see this as highly consistent with Muhammad's actions in Medina. Say one thing while doing another. Cobbling together alliances with Christians and Jews to further his end then accomplishing that end toss them aside and turn on them as enemies. The original community organizer IMO. Hmmm....now that I think of it that does sound all too familiar.

I believe he may be saying what he thinks he has to in order to keep the lid on the Brotherhood and other islamic extremists.

Egypt bloodshed: At least 149 killed as troops clear pro-Morsi camps
Egypt bloodshed: At least 149 killed as troops clear pro-Morsi camps
http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2...rsi-camps?lite
"CAIRO – Egypt descended into a chaotic bloodbath – and another political crisis - Wednesday after security forces backed by bulldozers moved into opposition protest camps set up by supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, sparking deadly violence.
At least 149 people were killed and 1,403 injured, the country’s health ministry said, but the toll looked certain to rise as unrest spread from Cairo to other parts of the country................"
The pro Morsi crowd got the short end of the stick - today.
We'll see how Friday turns out.

According to the last report I read, the Interior Minister announced that 21 police stations had been attacked and 43 members of the security forces killed, including two major-generals and two colonels. Since the Ministry of Health was stating that 149 civilians had been killed, I would assume that these 43 are on top of the 149, but further reports may change that.

It's Friday
Egypt crisis: Defiant Muslim Brotherhood plans marches
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23721584
"The Egyptian capital Cairo is poised for renewed protests by supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.
They are expected to take place two days after authorities broke up Muslim Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo with the loss of at least 638 lives.
Mr Morsi's supporters plan to converge on central Ramses Square from city mosques after Friday prayers. .................."
