Turkey's prime minister says a group within Turkey's military has engaged in what appeared to be an attempted coup

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's prime minister says a group within Turkey's military has engaged in what appeared to be an attempted coup.

Binali Yildirim told NTV television: "it is correct that there was an attempt."

Yildirim didn't provide details, but said Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy."

Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters.

ISTANBUL — The prime minister of Turkey said on Friday night that factions of the military had attempted a coup.

“Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said in comments broadcast on NTV, a private television channel. “The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so.”

Military forces shut two bridges over the Bosporus in Istanbul, and fighter jets were seen flying over Istanbul and Ankara, the capital.

Mr. Yildirim said security forces had been called in to “do what is necessary,” according to Reuters.

Reuters, citing a witness, reported that military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead in both Ankara and Istanbul.

Turkey's prime minister, Binali Yildirim, said that a "coup attempt" by factions within the military was in progress and vowed that the country's security forces would "uphold democracy."

Ahmet Yayla of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism posted an image on Twitter of military vehicles on the streets of Ankara.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties and there was no official statement from the Turkish government.

Meanwhile, private broadcaster NTV reported that both bridges across the Bosphorus strait, which separates Europe and Asia, had been closed to traffic.

The crowds in the streets appear pro-Erdogan, but don't seem to be attacking the troops. However, I have seen some people get shot on Sky News.

State news agency- a bomb has hit parliament.

Military- we are in complete control.

Turkish intel agency- situation is back to normal after an attempted coup.

Fog of war- ruling the night, as usual.
