Man in Italy catches 280 pound catfish

Ok, not exactly a catfish but a wels. They're almost the same. I'd be afraid if I were swimming in a river over there and saw one of those things.

It boggles my mind to imagine some of the things that lie beneath the surface of our waters. There are probably things within that same body of water that could make that fish seem small.

Outstanding catch!

Didn't they do an episode of River Monsters on the Wels? Supposedly they have swallowed the occasional person over the centuries.

We cultivated a big grouper in our canal. We would feed him the carcass of our catches. It always amazed on-lookers how he could devour a 20-30 lb dolphin carcass as if it was a tic-tac.. I think because we fed him he left us alone when we swam.

But,, out on the reef the groupers can be as aggressive as a shark. They are territorial and will BOOM when you are annoying them. They don't like sharing their personal lobster holes and will rush in and bump you if they think you are taking to many. You never tie your catch bag to yourself,, they will snatch it..

Here is an old pic from back when they were still legal. 450 pound goliath grouper caught by Buddy Jenks at the Big Indian Rocks Fishing Pier, Florida (1976)

They are now protected in US waters.
