What Flash/Recoil/Brake??
Spotted on FB..
Can someone explain why they bother to put a muzzle brake - flash suppressor on the weapon, when the flash is 3ft beyond the end of the barrel??

My FOG understanding is the finned - ported hunk of steel on the end of the barrel cools the gases down to or below the temp that creates flame/ignition.
In this picture is looks like there is unburnt propellent igniting after leaving the barrel??
This may be a question of what barrel length was used to proof the contract load -vs- the current use of chopped barrels..
I use Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 9mm & 38+P JHP in my 1.75 inch J frames and seem to have little or no flame.
Maybe someone should get the supply chair looking at "short barrel" propellents for 5.56??

The published Speer Gold Dot tables show very little difference in velocity and do not exceed rated SAAMI pressure specs. The load is not without some flash, but it's significantly less at night or in low light.
Additionally the Gold Dot projectile is a supper crowd pleaser..

Flash Suppressors?
Major Gunpowder manufactures almost NEVER disclose the formula or composition of the powders they manufacture. However some manufactures do admit to using a flash suppressant in their formula. The chemical used I think is an alkali salt eg KCl. Commercial manufactures will disclose that an addittive to suppress muzzle flash has been added, eg Buffalobore Ammo.
IMHO you should NEVER add anything to a commercial blended smokeless powder, TK.

This is why our company has a 5.56 mm machinegun suppressor in our product line.

The M855 Ball and M856 Tracer ammo is designed and spec'ed to be fired from a 20" barrel. The government also has regularly procured powder without requiring flash retardant, which could be an added cost requirement.
As you can note from the flash, the powder is not completely burned by the time the round exits the muzzle on the SPW, Para, or Mk 46 SAWs.
M4s, CQB-Rs, etc. have the same issue.
Good suppressors and muzzle devices will minimize this effect, but do add weight and length back onto the platform.
