Żubrówka [ʐuˈbrufka] also known in English as Bison Grass Vodka, is an Eastern European variety of dry, herb-flavored vodka that is distilled from rye and bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof). Its flavor is unique and is described as having woodruff, vanilla, coconut, and almond notes.

The rye distillate is flavored with a tincture of buffalo grass (Hierochloe odorata), which also gives the spirit its yellowish color. This grass grows in the Białowieża Forest and elsewhere. A blade of buffalo grass is traditionally placed in each bottle of Żubrówka, though this is largely decorative.

The name Żubrówka comes from żubr, the Polish and Belarusian (as well as Ukrainian and Russian) word for the wisent (European bison), which is particularly fond of eating bison grass.

We still have this imported at St Mary's Athletic club, a club opened in early 1920's by Polish Immigrants here in Albion, NY. You can also get it occasionally in Colorado Springs at McCabes Tavern on Tejon. A good shot vodka actually due to it not having the harshness of many, and some mix it with apple juice.

Well, as Destrier mentioned, I've seen it mixed with apfelsaft. Several of the Polish treats seemed to be popular for cocktails as they actually give something to the whole, rather than being "ok, cocktail design-X now altered with a ragged edge." Cool, it is a smooth shot.

Can only offer 1 story, part of which remains unconfirmed (the middle part). We started out at this Balkan place for dinner (Pan Am stewardesses as straphangers) and they were enjoying your object of interest but there was also some śliwowica involved at one point... It was kinda like watching elementary school teachers start on Grasshoppers at 4:15pm...

Side street little walk-down restaurant, great Balkan food near Bad Savigny Platz, great bar selection, but, damn, what was her name?
