Canberra, Australia car bomb

The only injury was to the driver. That's to be expected when you target an empty building at 2245 at night.

Van rams Australian Christian Lobby office in Canberra

The Canberra office of the Australian Christian Lobby has been damaged after it was hit by what the ACL described as a “car bomb”.

Windows are blown out and there is oil and debris strewn over the carpark outside the office in Deakin after it was allegedly hit on the side by a van reportedly carrying gas bottles last night.

A man is believed to have driven the white van towards the Eternity House building about 10.45pm on Wednesday, The Daily Telegraph reported. It is believed the alleged driver is receiving medical attention but there have been no arrests made.

ACL director Lyle Shelton described it as a “car bomb” when he tweeted two pictures overnight showing a burnt-out van at the front of the office building.

“A vehicle has rammed our office in Canberra & exploded. All Staff are safe. I do not know the condition of the driver. Prayers appreciated,” he tweeted. “Shocked that this could happen in Australia.”

A second tweet from Mr Shelton showed the van more clearly and said: “A closer view of the car bomb driven into the ACL office in Canberra tonight. Shocked that this could happen in Australia.”

The office was empty at the time and no one was injured in the explosion but Mr Shelton alleged the explosion was a targeted attack.

“We’ve had a number of death threats this year,” he told The Australian last night. “I’m sure this was an attack on us.”

This morning he told the Nine Network: “We’ve received death threats for our advocacy. This year we have upgraded security on the office, but we never thought we would have our office bombed.

“While we can’t speculate about the motives, it would appear that someone didn’t like what we’ve been saying in the public sphere.”

By 6am, the van had been cleared away with the strong smell of gas remaining outside the office.

Debris from the vehicle have been left behind, including a Toyota badge. The front windows of the two-storey building are smashed on both levels with mangled window blinds and light fittings hanging from the ceiling.

The office is located in a quiet street, less than a 10 minute drive from Parliament House.

ACT Police are expected to update the media today.
