Rich men north of Richmond

Curious to see if anyone has heard this new song. It seems to be skyrocketing.
It looks like it resonates with a lot of people.

Its a white guy playing a guitar and singing an anti-establishment song.
He's probably a climate denier too.

I have been wailing and clutching my pearls all week. I'm just waiting for the press release from the white house to let me know that I am safe to go outside again.
I can't be around free speech, critical thought, or anti government sentiment for to long or I start wanting to eat meat and use words like liberty and freedom.

Yuck.
Just, yuck.

I first heard it about a week ago. I guess it was the day of release, as I remember, there were some 900K views. They are saying it had 2M views on the second day.

I see him as a conservative Woody Guthrie if that's a thing. The singer/songwriter is just starting, his voice is a bit ruff.

I lose some of his singing because of tinnitus, but I like it.

Oliver Anthony said of "Rich Men North of Richmond" released on the 8th of August, 2023, "The universal thing I see is no matter how much effort they put into whatever it is they're doing, they can't quite get ahead because the dollar's not worth enough, they are being over-taxed. [...] I want to be a voice for those people. And not just them, but humans in general."

According to Oliver Anthony, the performance video of "Rich Men North of Richmond" was "first song to get out there that has been recorded on a real microphone and a real camera," and not just on his cell phone. The video has surpassed 2 million views just two days after its release on YouTube.

You know what you need? You need to understand, after the release of Trump Indictment 4.0, you - YOU! - can join with everyone else who ever had a thought or did a crossword while pondering the 2020 election results, thus constituting an "overt act" in a vast conspiracy.

YOU are now: Unindicted Co-Conspirator
(and I'm going to see if my daughter's silk-screening operation will render the T-shirt to prove it)
Harrumph!

Errata: And yes, Oliver Anthony's voice and that Gretsch Resonator guitar are a grand combination. 2x thumbs-up

I downloaded it. Like it. I've been downloading tons of country music as part of my transition to living in a free state. They haven't banned it here yet.

Heartfelt song. Plus, I like that he is playing a Gretsch Resonator. It looks and sounds
like one of the old National guitars

Bingo. Upon first hearing that's what my ears thought. And the Gretsch isn't spendy at all, especially for someone who's ever seen the price tag on a vintage National. Beer budget vs. selling off the Cadillac.

Mr. Anthony clarified the subject of his song is politicians of all parties.

From North to South, East to West....all whores.

The news is reporting today that he turned down an $8 million offer to sign a contract. He may be a person true to his convictions , and not looking for a financial windfall.

An establishment record label would likely not have released that song as he performs it.

Yeah, but I bet they would have no problem with a gangster rap song of any type…

Pfft...
That song is all about male privilege - "rich MEN of richmond"
Seriously?

The song is sexist.
He must think that only "men" have the intelligence, drive, focus, and ambition to succeed in national level politics. Has he forgotten about great aMEruhkins with names like Warren, Harris, Murkowski, Fienstein, Clinton, Collins, Jackson-Lee, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley, and Pelosi.

The song is transphobic.
Is he afraid to acknowledge that some of the highest positions in our current government are held by transgender professionals north of Richmond and not just "men" North of Richmond?

The song is xenophobic.
He fails to acknowledge that in addition to rich NORTH of Richmond there might be politicians living east, west and south of Richmond as well as those from other parts of the world that have found their way into national level aMErickin polyticks.
Of course he probably just thinks everyone in the South is friendly, generous, and honorable - only those dirty Northerners are crooked...

Shouldn't the song be titled, "Financially Well Off Multicultural Persons of Nonspecific Gender Identity Maintaining Living Quarters Near Richmond"

I just don't know - I'm going to have to think long and hard on this one. I'll have to do some research to see how George Snuffaluagus says I should feel about it.
