SSG Melgar enlisted in the Army in January, 2012 as an 18X.

In 2013, he started his Special Forces training in 2016 and was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) ​at Fort Bragg, NC​ on completion of the Special Forces Qualification and Special Forces Engineer courses. SSG Melgar conducted two deployments to Afghanistan as an engineer sergeant while serving with the Group.

At the time of his death, SSG Melgar was part of a small team in Bamako providing the Ambassador Paul A. Folmsbee intelligence about Islamic militancies in Mali to protect American personnel against attacks. The sergeant also helped assess which Malian Army troops might be trained and equipped to build a counterterrorism force.

SSG Melgar was a devoted husband to his wife, Michelle Melgar, and father to his two teenage sons aged 13 and 15 years old.

NOT a "new trial," it is a new sentencing phase due to misconduct by the prosecutors. I've seen a very disturbing trend over the last ten years or so where prosecutors lie, cheat, don't divulge mandatory disclosure information, or simply refuse to hand over information that the defense is entitled to.

This is square on the JAG's and the way they were trained (or NOT trained).
