Question Current/Expired NREMT license help with 18D Selection?

I ship out 3/28 and my NREMT-B license expires 3/31. I have all the CEUs that I need and all I have left is to find a 24 hr refresher course (which will be a challenge to find in a small town).

Question:
Should I stress about keeping my license current in hopes that a current license will possibly help my odds of getting 18D in the future, or is it a crap-shoot anyway and the needs of the army will override my past experience and my license? Does experience and knowledge reflect more than a piece of paper? Basically, what would 'look' better during MOS selection: if I had a NREMT license or if I have a NREMT license?

Thank you for your time and advice.

I don't know about "stressing" over it...but remember how long it took for you to get your EMT Certification (not liscence)? It would be a shame to have to go through all of that all over again.

If you do lose your cert-and are selected for the 18D program-you will attend the Army medical specialist training program (whatever the current MOS designator is) and will have the chance to once again be certified as a NREMT-B.

It isn't TOTALLY a crap shoot for your MOS selection-but you do need to meet certain criteria to be placed into certain MOS's. The fact that you are or have been EMT certified may play a role, but if your test scores aren't up to snuff then you won't be selected fro the 18D program.
SOF Medicine is not EMT-basic

It is a shame to allow ANY certification to lapse if you have the means to prevent it. It really is an individual responsibility to maintain your level of training.

Agreed. I didn't mean to imply that they were even in the same universe of technical know how and applied medicine...just that maybe perhaps my EMT-B experience/certification would possibly give me a step up towards the 18D.

Thank you for your time.

My buddy is EMT-B certified and was selected as a Charlie and not Delta. Needs of the Army bro, just do the best you can on those tests they administer during selection and put 18D as your first choice on your "dream sheet".

As far as your lapsed EMT cert goes.... if you do get selected as an 18D you retake it during Trauma in Phase III so that you can ride with the paramedics on rotations. Good luck.

Very true plus a plethora of other little cards that you get as well like PALS, ACLS, PHTLS, EMT-B and plus this Advanced Tactical Practioner diploma plus little card. If you have the means get it recerted and on the outside chance that you do get selected for 18D and you then make it to Phase 3 then when the rest of your class is taking the NREMT-B exam you can go home on a much deserved half day .....BAM theres your bonus!

Never fails, the 24 hour refresher I was waiting for is after I ship and so far, I can't get into any others around the state.

I've called the state EMS agency and so far there may be only 1 before I leave.

If I can't get the 24 hour refresher, well the situation may answer my question for me and my license may expire as a result. Sonnofa...

Wouldn't sweat it if you can't stay current...would be sure to list it on your "resume" of reasons why you want and should get certain MOS at SFAS...

Old, but updated...

Well, now that I am in the 18D program, here is some news that may help others.

As far as getting your MOS, yeah, it is like we have all heard-who knows? Maybe your experience will get you what you want, maybe not, but at least mention it as much as possible when you can so it will at least make you look somewhat smart in the MOS you want...

As far as keeping current with any EMT license, STAY CURRENT. It is kinda up to the mood of whoever is running the show here in SOCM, but better over prepared than under prepared. In my current class, had I kept mine current, I would have a nice half day or at least one less thing to stress about and study for. And that one less thing can make your day...trust me.

So stay current. Later.

That half day would be great for Language training, wouldn't it? Hmmmm... or PT...
