Del Slaugh RIP

My most favorite commo man, Del Slaugh, just passed unexpectedly.

You've heard the proverbial story of making commo on a barbed wire fence. While on a weekend drill, we had to make commo checks w battalion. Del knew this three-wire fence was on a perfect azimuth with this particular base station. We were set up and waiting for the start time. We're all bullshiting, ahem, pulling security... and Del was telling us this great war story. While in the middle of the story, he starts sending groups on his speed key and writing groups on the pad - without a freaking break in the war story! I guess time in Nam as an intercept operator was good experience.

He was one of my best mentors as a young DetCmdr and mourn his passing.

Info to follow.

Del was a one of a kind individual. He was a farrier by trade, one of the best (he's been recognized nationally as), and we met when I was working as a stand-by medic at the various horse shows around Denver. We formed an instant bond, once he found out I was prior military, seeing as he served in SEA with the Army 5th Special Force's group, and later in Colorado with the 19th group, and when I found out he and MR2 knew each other, well .... the stories came out like crazy.

Quick with a joke or story, or as we called 'em "lies", he was never without a smile, or a helping hand. Oh, and he LOVED his bagpipes. He always had pipe music playing back by his truck during shows. I told him I always knew where he was located, because I could hear "cats screeching" from his area.

My thoughts and prayers are with Del's family and many friends.
He will be missed.

UNTIL VALHALLA !!!!

There is also a project in the works of some of Del's many friends, making a bronze bust of Del and presenting it to his family during the 2023 Stock Show in Denver in January. Will post details as I get them if anyone wishes to help out or contribute.
