Introduction
My apologies, gentlemen, I originally replied to a post rather than creating a new thread.
Thank you for the warm welcome and the detailed instructions.
I am a graduate student in the sciences, specifically organic chemistry-the academic side of companies like Pfizer and Bayer. More importantly, I am someone who loves to learn. My brother gave me a copy of Five Years to Freedom by Col. Rowe, which lead me to google, which lead me to you.
I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to read and learn.

Introduction
My name is Scott Andrews. I am 21 years old and I am currently a student but recently come to the realization that it, isn’t for me. I am preparing to enlist in the Army next summer, if all goes well, under an 18x contract. I talked a bit with my recruiter as well as my cousin, who some time back, was enlisted as an Army linguist. She has been a great help in educating me on some of the things I will need to help in my goal. She provided me with the books “Masters of Chaos” and “Inside Delta Force” which led me into more and more research and some discussions with my recruiter, and more research, which eventually led me here. My family comes from a long line of professional servicemen, most recently my Uncle, Jerzy Kichner retired as a Captain in the Coast Guard after 30+ years, my cousin is a cadet in the Coast Guard Academy, his 2 half brothers are currently officers in the Coast Guard, and my brother had been a cadet but realized military life was not for him. As to why I would choose Army Special Forces over the Coast Guard that so many of my family has chosen? I grew up as a 2nd generation American, from a family that was Polish refugees in WW2, the thing they talk about most is how there was no one there for them in their time of need. Given the motto of the Special Forces of liberating the oppressed it just felt like the right place for me, and my family had a long history of service within the Polish Army, my great Grandfather, Jozef Maziec, being a “Virtuti Militari” recipient at the age of 19, for his rescue of superior officers on more then on occasion during the Polish-Soviet War 1919-1920. Basically a part of me wants to re-establish that old tradition, as well as serve my country and give back a little bit of what it gave to me and my family. Anyway, I’ve rambled on enough and I’m sure you all have better things to do then read this.

Howdy yall. I found this website through lightfighter and GOTX. Been a member there for a while which convinced me to join up with Army ROTC (I was already in college, might as well finish up, as much as I question the decision of becoming and officer...) I will graduate next year and hope to branch Infanty or Aviation (long shot). If not those, I pray to God I get something Combat Arms.
I am looking into the opportunities available to me as an officer in the SF community. This seems like a great place to start.

Welcome aboard Rick.
Actually if you have reservations about becoming an officer you probably ought to look at enlisting or pursuing an 18X contract.

I echo what COL Moroney said.
I have been a senior NCO, CW3, and retired as a CPT, you will not be a good O if you do not possess those traits that make an Officer a leader!

To everyone here who is serving or who has served, thanks for picking up the challenge and serving your country. Welcome to PS.com.
To those who are about to serve, best of luck. You have some extremely big shoes to fill. Don't ever let your buddies down, or give up. Keep your mind on the objective.
DOL.

My reservations are not ones that pertain to the duties of an officer, I enjoy leading and the evaluations of my leadership(both at school and at Fort Lewis this summer) say that I do a pretty good job of it. However, the way they do branch assignments is what bothers me. I could end up Infantry (ideally) or Chemical simply based on what needs the Army has. The possibility of being stuck in a pogue job is very high, along with riding a desk after only a few years with feet on the ground.
I have no reservations about enlisting either, it is easier to branch what you want (even if the 18x doesnt work out, your still 11B, unlike the as an officer) along with the fact that I would like to stay on the fighting side of things as long as possible. Either route I would ideally stay in for the full 20 + years.
I have already signed the contract and have been in ROTC for 3 years. They have been paying for my college and I now am "in debt" to them. I have been looking into my options upon graduation next year, and I want to be well informed as to what options are available for me however the next year works out.

Yes, that is correct and everyone is subject to same rules of the needs of the Army, but branch assignments are made based on demonstrated potential for successful service in whatever branch you get. You still have an option by seeking a branch transfer after you have served the minimum amount of time in the assigned branch. However, your options will be limited if you fail to perform to the best of your ability even in "pogue jobs" if that is your initial fate. Regardless of your branch, everyone reaches that time when they have to "ride a desk" and even those jobs are important because your level of performance is going to impact on those who are depending on you to fullfill the responsibilities of a staff officer. No one likes them, but we all have been there. If you are successful in obtaining a commission, you will be too. The key is to do whatever you do to the best of your ability. Even if you are in charge of the mess kit repair platoon, your level of performance will pay dividends for both the soldiers for whom you are responsible and being looked upon as a can do troop when the opportunity comes for you to compete against your peers for a more favorable assignment. Remember the Army is a team, it has many players and many functions non of which are insignificant. Good luck in your goals and while I may just be reading more into your post than is there, I would lighten up a little on the attitude least some non-fighting, desk bound pogue cuts you some orders to be the Musk-Ox control officer in Rejiavick, Iceland.
