My recent trip to the Zoo was fantastic, in more ways than one!
Being able to stand on my feet for a few hours with nerve damage in them was one thing to celebrate, but being able to get up close with some incredible animals was priceless.
Rhinos are amazing creatures, as are Bald Eagles, when you can spend some time observing them.

Can we add hog Viagra to the defense budget?
http://tribunist.com/news/three-isla...utm_source=CDH
04242117 b3
Few Americans are paying much attention to the growing epidemic of feral hogs in this country. Their numbers are increasing dramatically, and the pigs pose a legitimate danger to property. They also pose a threat to humans, as thee Islamic State fighters in Kirkuk, Iraq found out on Sunday.
04242117 b4
The three fighters aren’t fighting any more. They were killed by feral hogs. Few details are known at this point. It is unclear if the three died as a result of direct contact with the pigs, though that isn’t uncommon.
Feral swine are deadly. The larger domesticated breeds of pigs have interbred with their wild cousins. The result is a large tusked beast that may or may not have a natural fear of humans.
04242117 b1
For the Jihadists, though, there is another layer of irony. The Islamic faith has a long standing prohibition on pork. The practice stems back more than three thousand years, and is seen in many of the ancient religions:
“He has made unlawful for you that which dies of itself the blood and the flesh of the swine and that on which the name of any other than God has been invoked. But he who is driven by necessity, being neither disobedient nor exceeding the limit, then surely, God is Most Forgiving, Merciful.” Quran, Al-Baqara 2:173
While the death of the three Islamic State fighters may not have appeared merciful, the local news outlets in Iraq are reporting that the surviving fighters were anything but merciful to the offending pigs. They are rumored to have sought revenge and hunted down the herd en mass.
04242117 b5
Roving bands of hogs in the Middle East are not altogether common, at least not when compared to the plague of swine in Texas or many other parts of the American South. Yet Kirkuk is a desolate place. Many of the locals have been relocated to refugee camps. The farms in the area are not well tended, and that has made food scarce.
04242117 b2
The most prosperous and well fed in the area are the Islamic State fighters. The swine, seeking food, may become an even bigger problem for the insurgents in the future.

At first, I thought that was a photo of Michael Moore grazing....
Nice photos Holly, glad you had a great time. On occasions, I see Eagles flying over my home. They are quite beautiful and so graceful

Thanks Rita.
The Eagles I observed were quite active, always turning and flying here and there...it was amazing to just watch them. Am hopeful that some day I can visit them in the wild, as well as the beautiful Rhino's. (Only hope my feet cooperate...)

So I was reading about Holly's wonderful trip to the zoo and envisioning those Eagles in flight, then I read you post. I am happy for you too! One should take their happiness where one finds it. You were awake and out of bed when this happened weren't you?

My son is graduating from Michigan Tech with a Chemical Engineering degree this Saturday.
He is also enrolled in an Accelerated Masters Program and has earned 8 of the 33 credits he needs for his MS degree this year on the state's dime. One more year, and he will have his Masters in Chemical Engineering.
After that he is considering obtaining an MBA if a program that offers tuition reimbursement in the form of a teachership or fellowship of some kind can be found. Then he will get 3 years experience working somewhere else at my insistence, and then he wants to come to work with me. I hope I can afford the salary he will command at that point.
He and I sat down back in his Freshman year and based on my advice, he set up his education plan. He has not had a hiccup yet. When my kids were growing up, when we were talking, I always treated it as a given that they would go to college and get postgraduate degrees. It seems to be working with my Freshman daughter, also at Tech, as well so far. She wants to get a MS degree as well.
None of the college idiocy of the past 4 years made it to the UP of Michigan, thank God. I would periodically jokingly ask him how big the protests were up there. He always replied that everyone was too busy studying to have time to engage in any nonsense. "We're engineering students, dad. We don't have time for any of that crap."
Luckily enough for our country, not all the college kids have shit for brains.
I am as proud as I could possibly be.

Congratulations Axe, that is awesome!
My bro graduated with a Petroleum Engineering degree from OU, then worked his way up, the hard way...cutting no corners and being faithful to his endeavor.
He has traveled the globe now with an American based oil company and is currently on a four year gig in Cairo, working with the local government to do some good things for all involved.
I am so proud of him, after what he has been through, to be at the top of his game.
Wishing all the best for you and your son
Holly

Apparently Fuel Budget is Go!
What a difference an election makes.
Ex NORTHERN LIGHTNING kicked off. F-16s/F-22s/(alleged) F-35s roaring around the area. Ahh, the sound of Jet Noise. And of course the big flying gas stations & other players that come & go. They have these rolling threat-emitter systems they'll be travelling the state with to raise the "I'm so shit-hot" guys' pucker factor.
Couple recent articles mentioned Truax Fld in Madison & Volk Field up here as candidates for an F-22 squadron basing. Hope they come up here, the Gasthaus across the highway from the front gate there would love to go back into its former glory; their Rindsrouladen was top-notch. Could happen with the nice 10,000 ft runway & elec systems in place, as well as the fact that the People's DemoSocialist Enclave of Madison already likes to complain about that infernal jet noise from the existing F-16 traffic - what they get for being educated at the University of Whiners.
Meanwhile... the noise beats a local kid with his wannabe street-racer anyday.

#1 GD HS graduation
Numbah One Granddaughter walks tomorrow. Has been pretty neat watching her grow up; she's 3rd in class and they had to go back over extra-curricular activities & attendance all the way back to break some ties so she sits at 3.998. Home-schooled, local Catholic middle-school, then into the public HS system to proceed to smoke every AP class she cast her eye on.
Fine young woman. She is scary smart but well-grounded. She can sharpen her own blades, pull PM on her car, craft a helluva strawberry-rhubarb pie, read German poetry, appreciates from her engineer-like brain the low-wind loading of simple wire antennas (as she checks "ours" everytime she comes over after a storm), knows the difference between letting a bluegill getting aboard the hook & the "cross their eyes" hookset needed for a big largemouth, can tie a Palomar knot as well as get down on the ground & show her little cousins to tie it as well and is "all-in" when time to playact at the local 4H haunted house.
Peers & parents are all full of thoughts about what she should be. Fortunately she's just going to take care of 1st year undergrad general stuff first with a couple of scholarships she earned; she writes better than much of the BS we've all seen under a GO's signature. Currently her tiresome answer to all the good idea faeries is that she's going to be a professional clown. Said with her best poker face that usually shuts 'em up. Grandpa is like...
And, yeah, although she was the first one, she is Numbah One.*
* Those who admonish that "there aren't supposed to be favorites" will be completely ignored and are advised to dial 1-800-GETOVERIT.

Congratulations Badger ! Your granddaughter sounds like an incredible young woman !
I just watched my friend's son graduate from the USNA - also an incredible young man - I could not say enough about him and his baby sister...who also attends the USNA. We were privileged to have both to our home at Christmas and again a couple of weeks ago !!!
There are some GREAT young folks out there !
