forgot to mention earlier, the Broken Halo IPA is made by Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. just north of here.

Widmer should be on a lot more store shelves in the near future. When I was at their main brewery back in 2002 I was in awe! For such a "small" brewery they have a HUGE system. They brewed in 2 batches what it took me 100 batches to make! They have a 250bbl brewhouse and can run it 24/7 if they needed to and pump out about 2000bbls a day easily (that is 4,000 kegs or about 52,000 cases).

A few years back they entered into a distro contract with Anheuser Busch which gives them access to everyone of the AB distributers in the country as well as premium shelf space, very similar to what Red Hook did many years ago. I suspect that as the Widmer Bros. start to get their labels approved in the various states you will be able to find them outside the PNW/West Coast.

Very interesting. I saw a late night TV ad for Broken Halo, unusual for a micro brewery.

I leave for Germany about 9 days from now to play OPFOR for a few weeks. We should have some MWR time to see the country...Does anyone have any advice and or personal favorite beers to check out while in country?

Check out beeradvocate.com or ratebeer.com. They both have a search feature and should let you narrow it down to the region of the country that you will be located. Check out the local breweries no matter where you are and I will bet that you will find great beer. Be prepared though because unlike in the states where a brewery will have 6-12 beers they brew most German brewhouses will have between 1-3 they brew, a Pils, A Vienna/Munich Lager and maybe a Shwarzbier if your lucky. They will all be good though!

Optimator is a Doppelbock and a classic example of the style. If you like that beer you should check out Ayinger's Celebrator as well as Salvator Dopple. For a decent one made here in the US check out Sam Adams Dopplebock. While I do not care for some of their other beers they have done a bangup job on this one.

For those in NH check out Smuttynose brewing, in the Ohio area check out Great Lakes Brewing (The Instigator), and for those in the San Diego/Carlsbad areas check out Pizza Port Brewing for their C U Later Dopplebock, Chicago area check out Goose Island, Delaware & Pennsylvania check out the Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant . For the Pizza Port beers you may see them in bottles soon as they have purchased the old Stone Brewing Co. facilites in San Marcos (after Stone vacated for their new brewhouse down the road). For those of you in the PNW check out Widmer Bros Dopple.

Another import that is decent would be Hacker-Pschorr Animator Dopplebock. Many are familiar with Hacker-Pschorrs Pils, which is one of the best, but their Dopple should certainly be tried if you can find it in the US.

If you get to the Dallau area - Kloster Hefeweisse - a small local Trappist Brew.

I rarely imbibe any more, but when I do:
Yeungling (amber, black & Tan, porter)
Black & Tan (Guinness & Harp over a spoon)
any local / esoteric brew that I havent tried before - occasionally disappointing, but generally interesting.

I couldn't believe it, I went to OK City last weekend and found some decent beer that I can't find at home. I am a big fan of stouts and similiar styles of beer and I enjoy something a bit different from Guinness once in a while. Beamish fits the bill perfectly.

Yeungling is the oldest continually operated brewery in the US and while they are a big operation you can still call and find one of the Yuenglings answering the phone. Boston Beer Co. was founded 1 year prior to Yuengling (1828 vs 1829) but there was a span of several years from the 70's through 1984 when Jim Koch bought the company that the doors were closed and no beer was brewed.

Molson Coors Brewing owns the oldest label, Molson, in North America.

Not recommended from the People's Republic:

Tsingdao Gold or whatever it's called. Tastes like piss. Really.

Blue Diamond Pineapple Beer. I picked up a can of this at the supermarket today as a lark.

Soon taught me a lesson: If it looks like shit it'll taste like shit. Soon I went back to my scotch bottle (Chivas 12 year old).

I would say it is a fair assumption that any beer that has the word "Pineapple" in it is not going to be good.
