I was in the 1st, 38 years ago
I was with the 1st from 71 to 73, Bolo Point, spent time with 46th Company, and went to the 1st Group SCUBA school. Was one of the survivors of Raider School also.

For those who don't know the history of the 46th SF Co and its association with the 1st SFG, volunteers from the 7th SFG formed D Co (Augmented) 1st SFG at Fort Bragg in 15 April 1966 and deployed to Thailand 15 Oct 1966 with concurrent redesignation as the 46th SF Co. The 46th SF Co was redesignated 46th SF Bn in 1972 and then US Army SF-Thailand (USASFT) although their official designation was 3rd Bn 1st SFG until their inactivation and departure from Thailand in the spring of 1974.
I was one of those guys who was ' officially' in the 1st SFG but never stationed on Oki or wore the 1st SFG flash (we wore the 46th Co flash) and ' officially' in the 10th SFG but never stationed at Devens or wore the 10th SFG flash (we wore the 1-10th flash with the German national colors on the flash and wings background).
And so it goes...
Richard

I can't remember all the details but the Thai goverment got involved with the unit designation.
RTG didn't want the company to be part of the 1st Gp.

Damn Richard, stop confusing me with facts!!!
Also a problem with 1st and 46th was that the Japanese govt did not want combat troops to be deployed directly from their soil. That meant a stop in the Philipines and flash change or a stop in Lopuria and a Flash change. Even though 46th was officially 1st it could not be acknowledged with the Japanese. Open secret so to speak.
Atleast taht is what my old memory remembers while chnaging flashes in various locations.

Yeah - and we had 2 MLTs in Thailand (NKP and Ubon) + the Liberty Bn tng and spt for Laos (Pitts) + JCRC (after JPRC moved to NKP in 1973 w/BGs Kingston and Ulatowski when I was there) + the Freedom Runner and MEDTC tng and spt for Cambodia - with teams from Oki and Thailand all working to get the job done around the 'sensitivities' of our staunch allies the Japanese, Thais, and US DofS.
Life was good.

First Group...mmm...Let's see...
I was on ODA 114 from August 88 until September 90. I moved to C Company and stayed there until December 93.
I was in Lewis for 18 months (longest 18 months of my life) starting in May of 95, split between ODA 176 and 3rd Bn S-3. I was able to arrange an escape in November 96.
I got back to C Company in January 2000 and stayed there until I retired in September of 05.
Overall I loved my time there (except for that part at Lewis, that was pretty horrible). I got to work with great people doing a great job in great places, what's not to love?

Q-Course by Extension?
I was in SAFAsia down South at Camp Chinen, '72-'74. Took part in what I think was the first, and probably the only, "Q-Course" administered away from Ft Bragg. I think 1st Bn was responsible and had numerous participants, both officer and NCO.
Spring and Summer of '73 we had night classes with occassion field exercises. One week up at White Beach and the north end of the island. Final test was a low-level C-130 night drop into Korea. We stayed on the ground for 10 days or so.
At ENDEX, we went back into isolation somewhere on K-2 Airbase. Left unattended, things got rowdy. Boys being boys, ya know. "Someone" set off a smoke grenade outside the secret barracks. AP's and base cdr were VERY upset, and we had our own personal escort to the airfield for a midnight departure.
They made the course tough. Out of 2 teams that made it as far as Korea, I was among the handful who ultimately passed the board and was awarded a 3-Prefix or S-Suffix.
As age has a way of helping the memory fade, that's the best I remember it.
Anyone else there with me???
Our handler (OIC) was CPT James McQuirk (hope spelling is right)
Anyone remember him???
