I don't think so. Roycroft, what's it look like on your microscope?

Hmmmm, could be right. Magnified it a bit and it doesn't look quite right for a 'biner.

Crip, your eye has been supected to be in need of calibration lately, but...

I would hazard that item to be the hilt of a Gerber Mk. 2.

Mr. Harsey what do you think it is?

Re: Flag

Soldiers are authorized to wear the full-color US flag cloth replica during joint or multi-nation operations, at the discretion of the organizational commander. Soldiers are not authorized to wear the full-color replica upon their return to home station.

Edit: I don't know when this became regulation, so it may not apply to this picture.

Having just sold My personal Mark II, I can say that that does indeed appear to be a Gerber handle. The color also suggests that it was made after the 1970's. But we already knew that.

This helped:

A few things about the picture
M16’s and not M-4’s.
No optics on weapons.
All locked and loaded, no blank adapters.
Drive on rags on head and neck.
Ammo pouches full.
Live grenades on ammo pouches.
Map in background is military, and very large area of operations/responsibly.
American Flag on right shoulder.
A cot next to the Chief and an open box of MRE’s next to the Big guy on the right.
SF “Tabsâ€
Boots scuffed up.
Everything I’ve mentioned either tells a timeline or a story/location in itself.
I am curious as to why the ONE flag "tells you a story." Why is that?

The number of US Flags does not matter, because there is ONE tells me a story.

My guess on time frame is between 1986 and 1994. I would say after 1985 because, although it is pretty hard to tell from the photo, the grip of that pistol looks more like an M9 than an M1911, and I don't think they started issuing the M9 until '86.

I don't think the Army began using the M4 until at least the end of 1994, so I would say it is before that.

So I'm going to say the photo is between 10 and 18 years ago.

The gentleman kneeling in the front has a digital watch which appears from the photo to have a round frame. I don't recall seeing digital watches with round frames much. I used the "latest" G-Shock during that time and it was a more of less square faced watch. It's not much to go on, but lends itself to the photo being sooner rather than later.

Also, the individual in the middle, standing, appears to be carrying a SAW judging from the bulk of the receiver and reflection of the stock on the map. As far as I know that was a late eighties addition to the arsenal.

But the quality of the photo, IMO, makes it unlikely that it was taken within the past 15 years. Also, the markings on the box of chows is unlike the markings that I saw when I was in from '90-'94. So I will guess it is a little before that but not much.

I'm going to tend towards the 1988-90 time frame. And I'm going to say that most of the men in that photo are now between 45-50.
