Ethnomathematics is just another stepping stone in the dumbing down of America's youth which sets them on a path towards servitude and ineptitude.
TZ's post brought to mind Common Core math and the confusion it creates for many, and how it has short circuited many youth including my son. Nothing like getting every answer correct only to fail because you didn't use the prescribed process. I work for a person who was an engineer at Skunkworks who donated his time to teach math to a bunch of youth (like my son) who had difficulties with math. By the end of his course all but one or two kids aced the final. The facility was amazed at what he had accomplished until he told them how he accomplished this feat.......old school teaching! He was told that was verboten and they were not allowed to teach in that manner.
His response was something to the effect of 'Do you want them to learn the basic of math, or would you rather them fail because they don't use the prescribed process'.
Worse yet the schools can't leave a child behind so they graduate kids who do not understand the basics and will have a extremely difficult time succeeding in the real world.
I would wager that China, Russia and India are already taking full advantage of this decline. Hell, they probably gave grants to Academia to create these new and improved teaching methods.

The Nous Defions symbol that was popular at the Mott Lake SOT training facility back in the day could now get someone removed from the Regiment?

I have had this same argument with my daughter (5th grade Math teacher). She says rote teaching, i.e. multiplication tables doesn't work. I merely said it was enough to build this country and put men on the moon. As for those "grants" for new methods...try researching something called "Singapore Math." That was a huge push a few years ago.

That is a topic that is a basis for a justified generational rant at any time. (I suppose the old kids' pencil box with the slide-rule-like thing that drilled in the tables up to 9x9 wouldn't be allowed in a modern class.)

She believes that because that's what the indoctrination system and the union taught her.
Fantastic comeback about building the country and putting men on the moon.

I was going to say the same thing. 8+1 is 9, which is divisible by 3. Bad numbers indeed.

Very true...didn't help that she went to a very liberal tree-hugging university.

Yep, it sure does. If people would dig deep enough, I'm sure there is something "evil" about many things. History is what it is and symbolism has played a large part of our history -- good and bad. Changing them won't change a thing.
