Just to play Devils Advocate, it wasn't an easy thing surviving as a Nuke sub officer under Rickover.

Well now that sort of brings up a short story about me and "getting together to hoist a beer". When I took over my second SF company the company had a cookout and the beer flowed real freely. I do not drink for many reasons, but those sort of distract from the tale. Anyway an ex-marine(if there is any such thing) and then currently an SF wpns SSG decided, as is most often the case, to sort of test the waters with the new guy. He found a short string hanging off my jungle fatiques, sauntered up to me with his buck knife (only because Bill Harsey's knives were available then) said excuse me sir, but you evidently are big into mountaineering as you have brought your climbing rope with you. He then asked permission to remove it, which I granted. Then to recognize him for his astuteness and obvious mountaineering expertise I asked him to take that rope over to the 4x4 post holding up the banister leading into the team room and tie me a bowline. Well in good spirit he actually tried to do it, but of course the "rope" was too short and SSG Townsend,my knife weilding NCO, came humbly back to see me and apologized for letting his mouth overload his ass and told me that he and his team wanted to have me drop over at the local hook and bullet for a beer. I told him that I would be glad to stop by but not to be offended, but that I didn't drink. Well that sort of floored him and he agreed to it. He did, however, get me to promise that I would have a drink with the troops when I turned over command in the future. Well, I had forgotten all about it and the day I changed command SGM Snider called the company together and directed ODA-221 to bring out the commander's stein. Well Ed Townsend (now an SFC) had the handles and Jay Graves held the bottom of this crew served beer stein and presented it to me with the reminder of my earlier promise. I didn't have to eat my words, but I sure as hell had to drink them. Fortunately Duke Snider made sure that everyone else got a shot out of this damn thing also otherwise I think I probably would had to crawl home. So councilor, if this gathering ever does come about not only are you welcome but my wife will surely welcome any adult supervision and legal council to keep my from overloading my ass with my mouth
