Peter Fritzsche, Life and Death in the Third Reich (ISBN-13 9780674034655).

A work of cultural, political, and social history that also incorporates a subtle understanding of military history.

Not for nothing does Geoff Eley praise this book even though Fritzsche seeks to refute his work. Source is here.
Quote:
With remarkable vision and poise, Fritzsche guides us through the interior of the Third Reich's racial imaginary to explore the terrible effectiveness of the efforts required of Germans in thinking themselves into the morally coercive world of the Volksgemeinschaft. Commanding the vast literatures on Nazism with enviable facility, he seamlessly combines major themes with a keen eye for the telling detail. This is one of the most illuminating reflections on the popular history of the Third Reich in many years.
At times, Fritzsche's prose is so vibrant that you may hear the plaintive cries echoing from freight cars as their occupants hurl towards the oblivion that awaits. Only one other book--Alistair Horne's The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916--has had me seeing the dead standing at the foot of my bed.

These are good ones that I've run across in college.

P.W. Singer, Wired for War
About the modern and future technology of war, and how it could affect us. Specifically robotics.

John Keegan, The Face of Battle
Military history from Agincourt to the Somme, that tries to convey what combat meant for the soldiers of the time.

M van Creveld, Command in War
An interesting look at command. The decisions, the communication, the philosophy, the logistics, from Greece to Vietnam. Includes Napoleon at Jena, Moltke at Koniggratz, Vietnam, and The Arab Israeli conflicts.

The Devil's Horsemen
The campaign of Batu Khan and the Golden Horde in 1241. The tactics and training of the most powerful army of its time, and of Subedei Bahadur, an illiterate military genius, and how the Khans conquered from the Pacific nearly to the Atlantic.

Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, Lost Victories
The war memoirs of the brilliant German general.

Donald Hamblen, One Tough Marine
A look at the Recon Marine who lost a leg, and then went on to participate in active duty Force Recon and SOG in Vietnam.

D. Leebaert, To Dare to Conquer
The impact of the commando on the history of wars. From Alexander to the Confederates to WWII, and their dynamic shaping of our future in stealthy hunts throughout the world.

And probably best of all,

General Fuller, The Conduct of War from 1789-1961.
He had some very interesting perspectives on the world at the time and got to see it unfold.

Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman By Jon Krakauer.

Disclaimer: It is a very left leaning book. I would tread lightly on this one if you are considering it.

Not sure that's what I want to read before going to bed.

I liked it as I do all his books, but you should read Extreme Measures first Most of his other books can be read independently of each other however. I was #157 on the hold list at the library for it but was able to loan a lucky day copy that does not go into the hold pool but is for those lucky enough to see it on display.

I think Extreme Measures and Pursuit of Honor are paired similarly to Moscow Rules and The Defector from Daniel Silva in that they are almost like part 1 and part 2.(http://danielsilvabooks.com/content/books.asp)

one more thing...
Mitch Rapp refers to a female senator by ma'am and she repeated the same exact line in the book that Senator Boxer did in real life to the Brigadier General who respectfully addressed her ma'am.

FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY: A HISTORY OF THE CHARACTER, CAUSES & CONSEQUENCES OF MILITARY STUPIDITY FROM CRASSUS TO JOHNSON

by Charles Fair (Author)

A collection of incidents where the incompetent and politically motivated believe their own delusions of grandeur and develop intricate plans, delay, procrastinate and then overreact leading to pointless campaigns and subsequent defeat. Much of the time not realizing that they have brought the results upon themselves due to their over-inflated egos and perceived self importance.

(Why does that sound familiar??)
