"A History of Europe Since 1945" by Tony Judt.
It's written at a graduate or post graduate level so be prepared for the vocabulary if you chose to read it.
Some interesting notes:
The last post war refugee & relocation centers in western Europe didn't close until the late 50s.
Former members of the Third Reich GeheimeStaatspolizei or GESTAPO were instrumental in forming the East German STASI or Stattssicherheit.

The Man In The High Castle - the 1962 book which established Phillip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. His Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (which was made into my favorite sci-fi movie, Blade Runner) is a classic.
It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because 20 years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied jointly by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Last night I finished "The Irish War" - The Military History of a Domestic Conflict by Tony Geraghty.
A very interesting read about the troubles, the author is critical in his analyzes and quite balanced in his reporting.
I can highly recommend the book.

A number of books, I switch between them.
John Jakes, "Charleston" - fictionalized account of the fight for independence from the Brits. General Marion, Light Horse Harry and a whole bunch of not memorable characters work to get us free from England. I like John Jakes writing, always have from his first books.
Micheal Gannon's "The New History of Florida" , used in all the universities in fla as the definitive history of the state. Reaquainting myself with my home state.
Anthonly Randazzo, "The Geology of Florida"...again reminding myself of what I knew, but forgot in 5 yrs.
Dr. Archie Carr, "The windward road" <---I worked for two yrs as his intern with sea turtles and land tortoises. I have to be able to answer the grandkids and son in laws question. They have a 100 acres of gopher tortoise habitat backing on thier back yard. We dug up one lil dude and relocated him the day they moved into the house. He liked living under the A/C unit. 
Susan Orlean's "Orchid Thief" - true story of John Laroches' orchid obsession and thievery on the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. Some of the orchids growing there, grow nowhere else on the planet. His codefendents were members of the Seminole Tribe of Fla, inc. It is a very interesting story of grandiose dreams and what some people will go to, to get that one obscure orchid plant that, in thier minds, will round out thier collection. Reference to the Marie Selby Botanical gardens in Sarasota. The worlds largest collection of Bromeliads. I used to grow bromeliads. Each plant is a whole ecosystem in itself. My going back to dirt dwelling had a lot to do with missing gardening. John Laroche is a very very interesting character in Fla History.

I think that will hold me through Christmas.. or not. I am a prolific reader. OTOH, I start classed soon for my MCSA/E to get the official certs for stuff I have been doing for years. I think my reading time, might be cut into seriously I think..

Too Big to Fail by Andrew Ross Sorkin
The history of the bailout. Doesn't explain all the intricacies and interrelations of what caused the collapse, just what was happening on Wall St and Washington DC to prevent a total collapse of our financial system. Very interesting book. If people want to know what happened this is one of the books to read.
