So I followed up with the guy selling this patch. Sent him the image posted here by AM. He sent me a scan of a page from a book by a guy named Sutherland which matches the patch he's selling. Image below. AM, do you think the book has it wrong or could the patch have been made in different versions over time?

The seller seems to be a very legit guy -- wrote a book on Marine insignia. Here's his book:

and here's the image he sent me:

My opinion, for what it's worth

I've been working on Ambush Master's pic and noticed that the 'color captures' that I take of the reaper's syth in photoshop end up looking like the picture from the book. What it does is combine the blade with the clouds and moon into one capture. End result is the picture from the book.

Also, the black boarder on the scanned book picture is wide, like somone re-did the outline so they could capture the picture better.

There's a bunch of other little details that only show up when the pics are greatly enlarged.
I wonder it the patch factory or hand made. That would explain the descrepancies.

In many cases, likely George Petersen's reproductions: http://www.nchsinc.com/shop/VN_US_Patch&Badge.htm
