Linux is a great OS and I use it as well...I wish more people would use it. Partition Magic is a great tool that I've used for specific situations since the late 90's. Before people attempt something like your suggesting though they need to backup all their pertinent data.

I've been using MS Anti-Spyware and it seems to work well, although I'm still running Ad-Aware as well.

There are also rumors that Microsoft will bundle this along with anti-virus software into a subscription service code-named A1.

MS announced last week that it will be given away to licensed owners of XP. As a stand alone. Gates did this at the last big tech show.

That Win XP w/SP2 screwed my desktop up. Luckily I copied all my pics to disk!

I lost so much SH!T it aint even funny and it even slowed my computer WAY down.

Read the reviews here http://www.download.com/Windows-XP-S...?pn=2&sb=0&v=0

My laptop will stay the way it is. I'm not about to try WINUPDATE on it.

Sorry you had those problems, Guy. I've put it on 2500 systems here with little or no problems. Anything we can do to assist?

Kyo, you're right. The way I read this is that MS will offer a bare-bones functionality version free, then charge for additional features, like Zone Alarm basic versus Pro. But then again, if it's only for licensed Windows users, it's not really "free."

Gates: Consumer Anti-Spyware Tool Will Be Free
By Ryan Naraine
February 15, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO—Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed plans to roll out anti-virus and anti-spyware products for enterprise customers, but details on pricing and release dates remain tightly under wraps.

Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates used the spotlight of the RSA Security conference to discuss Redmond's aggressive push deliver the first version of "the ultimate mail virus protection" by the end of this year.

He also announced that a consumer version of Microsoft's anti-spyware software will be free for genuine Windows users.

"We've looked hard at the nature of this problem, and made a decision that this anti-spyware capability will become something that's available at no additional charge for Windows users—both the blocking capability, and the scanning and removal capabilities. Those are features we think should be available to protect every system," Gates said.

Microsoft on Tuesday also announced it will push out a refresh of the Internet Explorer browser by July or August, despite recent statements to the contrary. However, Version 7 will only work under Windows XP and Service Pack 2, leaving many users out in the cold. Click here to read more.

Gytis Barzdukas, director of product management in Microsoft's security business technology unit, said the free anti-spyware tools would only be available for a "personal edition" and made it clear that an enterprise version with management capabilities will carry a price tag.

"We're planning a refresh [of the anti-spyware beta] within the next few months. In the meantime, we're talking to enterprise customers, asking them about the management capabilities they need. Once we figure all that out, we will release a managed version," Barzdukas said in an interview with eWEEK.com.

He declined to discuss marketing plans or address reports that anti-spyware/anti-virus/firewall products will be bundled into a security subscription service code-named "A1."

"We have trials for subscription type products all the time. A1 is just one of those things. These are usually small, limited trials," Barzdukas added.

During the keynote presentation, Gates said the anti-virus product will piggyback on enterprise-ready functionality in the recently acquired Sybari Antigen, which provides mail protection for networks that support applications such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes platforms.

"The e-mail vector continues to be the primary means of virus threat," Gates declared, nothing that 88 percent of virus incidents in corporations are coming through e-mail. "And it's our belief that we need to beef up and really improve the scanning capabilities there," Gates said.

"We're looking at building sort of the ultimate mail virus protection. We looked at what we're using internally at Microsoft, that was the Sybari product. We looked at what they'd done with the multiple engines, the different layers of scanning, and really specializing in infrastructure and drawing on others for the virus engines," he added.

Gates said Sybari's use of multiple virus scanning engines was a key feature that gives customers the best of all worlds. "You really want to take the best ideas of many people writing these scanning engines, and get those working on your behalf. You want to scan at the SMTP level as well as at the store level. Both of those are very important," he said.

Sybari has licensing deals to use virus engines offered by Norman ASA, Kaspersky Lab, Sophos Inc., Computer Associates International Inc., and VirusBusters Inc.

Barzdukas said Microsoft plans to retain those partnerships and add its own "GeCAD engine" to the mix, referring to technology the company acquired from GeCAD Software Srl., of Bucharest.

Thumbs up

Got it, now I'm working on getting my media back up.

I'll call MS later today...It won't be a pleasant conversation.

Why does that not surprise me?

Guy-
Call Roguish lawyer and let him make a three way phone call to Microsoft with one of his phone recording devices on in the background. I would love to listen to a posted copy of the .wav file of that "conversation". haha

I had training files of everything, you name it!

All gone now...bastards! Now they want registration #'s of all the programs I purchased. I shouldv'e just boolegged those SOBs.

If you had seen the amount of Intel and training videos I had on this system...it would blow your mind.

I recorded every operation conducted by SF that was broadcasted by a TV show on this computer.

I'm not a happy camper at this moment.

NTFS (and most likely FAT32 too), which is what Win XP use, data can be retrieved after deletion if the sectors on the harddrive is not overwritten again. In short, do not use the computer with that as a primary disk if you want to do this.

Get a second harddrive and install Win on it and get a data retriever program, such as Recover98 Express (I googled this, there are probably better. Can Partition Magic do this, Kyo/Dan?).

This is because the data is not deleted from a drive when you "delete" it, the inode pointing to the correct places is. Sort of like erasing the label on a drawer, and not putting on a new label till the you're filling that drawer again. Till then, you can pull out all the drawers and check the contents.

This, btw, doesn't work with some of the unices (Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, etc) file systems, because some of them work differently.

Regarding Linux, I don't have much to add. What you've all said is fine. Backup, repartition, try it out, like it or hate it and go with what you feel like.

You must be crazy! I think it's easier to rebuild, than recreate. The more I try to find files...the more I get frustrated.

I just spoke with Best-Buy and they want me to bring in my computer.

There is NO way in hell...I'm going to un-wire this thing and drive across town. That means; I'll have to put all this stuff back together.

The wife gets home in three hours and dinner will be ready...LMAO!

I never had a problem until I started this, Win Up-Date stuff. I should have left well enough alone.
