I have not been able to get in touch with my Mother for 2 days now. I heard from my sister that she is "staying put". Now I am worried, staying put is not too safe where she lives. I feel like driving my ass down there and picking her up. I hope that she is aware of the danger and takes shelter when she can. All I can do now is wait and see.

My mom is in Bonita Springs, not too far from Naples. She just called me and said they are going to stay put, I hope she still has a home after this. She is being stubborn, sounds just like me. LOL My sister is now near Venice Beach, a place called "Rotunda" West.

COLLIER COUNTY

All county residents living west and south of U.S. 41 have been placed under a mandatory evacuation effective immediately.

The City of Marco Island has issued a mandatory evacuation order effective immediately.

Mandatory evacuations will go into place at 1 p.m. on Friday for Goodland, Everglades City and Chokoloskee.

Residents of mobile homes throughout Collier County, especially those east of Collier Boulevard, are strongly advised to evacuate to a hardened structure or to an emergency shelter.

UPDATE (9/8)--Collier County has issued a new mandatory evacuation for areas west and south of U.S.-41.

A little bit of info..

Irma is moving very slow,,
It is forecast to have a duel time in-excess of 24 hours.

Hurricane Andrew blow by in less than 6 hours......

Irma is something like xx times larger than Andrew..

She is about 6 miles from the beach, I did tell her to make sure they head to a secure, concrete structure which offers better protection, and to bring necessities. They live in one of those manufactured home retirement communities. I am pretty sure those structures are not hurricane sound. My sister wanted them to come up to their place, and they refused. Makes me want to scream with frustration.

When I think of the many hurricanes I have been through it's amazing how they all seemed to have distinct personalities...The location might surprise one as well (Up along the Eastern Continental Divide in WNC) we got them coming and going from any of 3 directions. Once again the predicted path of Irma is heading for that area.

The one hurricane that was like an artillery attack more than any other was Hurricane Opal, Ivan a close second. Usually a hurricane will loose it's energy when it is no longer over warm water but Hurricane Opal had much of it's energy high up in it's top so not only did it slam in to our 3500' elevation with most of it's force still intact we could smell the salt water...a few residents even claimed shells were deposited. It's hard for me to see how high the energy is in Irma but very clear there is a lot of it.I see that energy is usually stated in Millibars but usually illustrated in an overhead view vs a cross section. The wind direction and water bands play a big part in how much destruction that area will get so 50 miles one way or another can matter...Prayers for those in the path and organizing for a trip just in case.

MacDill AFB closed. High winds and located in a flood zone - sticking out into Tampa Bay - storm surge is going to be a bitch.

Riding this thing out is going to be an adventure.
