Why is it that we always seem to pick the side with the soldiers who won't fight?

What gets me is this happens a lot. Didn't this happen a couple of years ago at JRTC. When ANA Command from KMTC came here to observe JRTC Training center?
Also, talk about pilot training I think is has already happen. If nopt with teh ANA it was Pakistani pilots when they came out to Ft Bliss for HELO Training. I have to ask my Nephew, but he is in the AF and he said something about them training ANA and Paki pilot somewhere and they popped smoke too. SSDD

They'll fight, but not for some Nation building 'thingy' that they have no clue about when the exact same pirates are in charge that have been in charge for ages.
Karzai played us like rookies with his persona and bullshit and we bought it.
Look at the culture, see how they interact to get ahead/survive and design something that can help them within their own construct. That should only be in the short term....point 'em in a direction and beat feet home after killing the bad guys.
Having said that, Nation building is for the people of that Nation. Period.
God I hope we have figured that shit out.

There is something about that posts name " Joint Base Cape Cod" do you suppose they possibly went over the hill because of the harshness of conditions there?

We (the U.S.) keep trying to apply our values to a tribal culture. They are loyal only to themselves. They will fight for anyone that pays them to fight a tribal enemy. Whoever found them at Niagra Falls could have saved us all a lot of time and money by pushing them over the falls the minute they found them....

Is there any comparison with say Vietnamese in the early 70's or Iranians in the late 70's US doing a runner?
I would think the Vietnamese might stick out like dogs bollocks at the time, but I think I recall reading about some Iranian Air Force training in the US being shipped back "dead men walking".
I'm pretty sure the Indonesians who trained a fair few Cambodians(then and now) had a few try to do a runner back in the 70's.

They "lose" three Afghan officers and now a guy manages to hop the fence of the White House and make it inside of the house before being apprehended. Well this is just one hell of a weekend for the Obama administration. What next, a hot air balloon drops Kim Jung Un pamphlets on Obama's lap?
Here's more on that story.

Afghan soldiers’ strange trip included stop at Cape strip club
By Maria Sacchetti | Globe staff September 23, 2014
Fifteen minutes before closing time on Saturday night, the telephone rang at Zachary’s Pub in Mashpee, a club featuring “all-nude” women, Keno, and $4 beers. An anxious-sounding security official from Camp Edwards wanted to know whether anyone had spotted three soldiers from Afghanistan.
“He said: ‘We’re missing three people. They didn’t show back up. Are they at your place?’ ” club owner Richard Halpern recalled Tuesday. “Which I thought was very strange.”
The men were in the United States to take classes in handling emergencies, but vanished Saturday after an off-duty trip to a shopping mall. They showed up Monday at the northern US border trying to cross into Canada, and on Tuesday, the details of their 500-mile journey remained a mystery perhaps to all but federal officials jailing them in upstate New York, where the men are facing deportation.
