Hazing incident caught on tape

When we came back from VN, we were called names.
I just saw the video 10 minutes ago on CNN.

Stupid, un-called for shit like this can get the Tom-tom's going again.
Guy's excited he got promoted, then his " leader" almost caves in his chest.
If I was an E-4 in the 82nd, I'd say fuck it I like being an E-4 better.

I witnessed some idiotic stuff like this. Although not as violent but just as disgusting. The atomic sit up. I never participated. When I became a team leader-I did everything thing I could to stop this kind of nonsense. I'd go to CID if I had to. For a while I was a bit of an outcast. But as it turned out-we had a rotation of new senior NCO's come into the unit and they didn't tolerate hazing either.

In the late 80's my unit in the 82nd had a 1SG that was caught, tried and convicted of trafficking cocaine. He fell out of every PT and never went to the field with us.

One could only imagine what kind of discipline the unit had. At the morning formation following PT, half the unit wore OG 107's and half wore BDU's, very few had any polish left on the jungle boots. Most folks wore them scuffed down to the brown leather. Discipline was really lax.

The hazing was intense. Atomic sit ups, a few beatings and many b.s. type details like taking out all the garbage cans in Dress Greens. Grass drills in dress greens was a fun one. If your boots were clean, shined and uniforms pressed you were hazed as well. Theft was rampant. 1987-1988 was a tough year in this unit.

It's beyond me why someone would want to serve with/under anyone who thinks hazing is "cool".

Leaders who allowed incidents like this to occur are not leaders and the UCMJ should see to it that they are never in a position of leadership again. I hope this E-8 (He is an E-8 not an NCO) is reduced to at least an E-4. I've had my "bloodwings" but that is about it. Even that is a dangerous tradition that should be stopped.

The E-8 that committed this has received a Letter of Reprimand... Whether local or permanent I don't know and doubt that will be released. There can't be anything further done to him, because that would be double jeopardy. If a local LOR he will likely do a little tour at Korea and then PCS back to Bragg and the LOR would be gone from his file. If permanent that's different.

We watched and discussed the video at work in our down time, and my MSG brought up the point that he was part of the clique. It is unfortunate that people are not fair and impartial when dealing with matters, especially concerning people they favor. Had this been an individual that the unit's senior leadership didn't like, he would have been hung out to dry.
