They don't smell good until skinned...

From my experience with the Apache's its safe to say it smells like a rotten cantaloupe.

Don't have rotten cantaloupe around either

If you're in rattlesnake country just stamp you feet every once in awhile if you don't want to be up close and personal. They'll generally move away from the vibrations. At dusk and dawn they like open areas and trails to warm up.

I have had them not move or rattle when in a mating area. Tapping the brush where movement is heard with a long stick will usually get you a rattle (some don't). If this happens its better to circle around in a more open area where you can see better.

Some of the snakes in AZ have a long reach...
