Speaking of which, I finally broke down and watched the new version of "True Grit". I almost turned it off when they stole the first scene from "Hang 'Em High." It turned out ok, but it wasn't The Duke.

To your above list, I would add The Rifleman.

The mind also changes. Remember Marty Stoufer, (SP), Mutual of Omaha Animal Kingdom, both shows showed slow action, quiet stalks, quiet narratives, etc.? Today, the channel would be changed because it "moves to slow". Point-click and instant gratification is here to stay.
Seseme Street, Telletubbies, (which from the point of many educators) is quite good for the 3-6 year olds. Repeated stories, repeated vinettes, etc., who has not held a small child and when the story book is finished, they say, "read it again."
Sesame Street held attention for 8-12 seconds, Barney changed the theme or image every 4-6 seconds with a jump, laugh, gag, image change.
We're doomed.....
Think I'll start teaching brain tanning and flint knapping to little kids.

The Lone Ranger was both. Law enforcement by reason, gun and sometimes by recruiting the locals to handle their own problems.
Law shows are closely drawn from human interest stories, which is by definition "drama".
Edited: The Lone Ranger wore a Cowboy hat, but he was never a cowboy, but he did ride a horse, and had a local asset in Tonto.

Song
Music starts
"Mommas don't let your babies grow up to be Lawyers,
Make em be Cowboys, Bikers, Soldiers and such...."
Music ends
Sorry! I couldn't help it.
I believe that the current batch of youths will be just fine. While I was in Iraq my Daughter signed up for high school USMC JROTC, I was both proud as well as concerned. No she did not run off to join the Marines when she turned 18, she is in college one year ahead of her peers because she took college level classes while in high school. Good kid and no I did not put her up to any of it. Hard working, studious, and patriotic. She and her peers are as good a generation as any.

If you have not hooked up on a XBOX 360. You are missing out. Between Zune, Netflix and HULU. I don't watch regular TV anymore. It's nice not having someone else deciding whats appropriate.

Some of my closest friends are bikers, strippers and ex-cons.
Coincidentally, my children think they're family and call them, "Uncle Jimmy", "Aunt Cindy" and "Stabs".
