Didn't know it was called sickners...Great little post, AusDigger.
Prepping for Selection?
Read this over and over, guys ... This little advice and insight above is wonderful for prepping for selection - But, not only that - this is simply great preparation for life.
My son related to me that once he understood this physical "mind trial" experience it helped him to get over the hump and endure - It's a mental thing. He said many guys were voluntarily withdrawing in SOPC because their mindset was on the rest and then when the reward of rest and the anticipation of the pain coming to an end - didn't happen - Hey, the goal-post moved - and the rest was delayed or denied altogether - Guys were quitting. Not fair some might say - Hey, life ain't fair....War ain't fair. This isn't the high school football team - You're preparing to be the best warrior on planet earth.
It is over only when you are actually moving onto the next thing - it's freak'n never over.
My son said to me, " Dad, the question is - 'Am I going to quit?' - it's a mental thing. It's in your head...Once I adjusted my head - things got better - I was fine."

Its all about:
1. expecting selection to be the hardest thing you will ever do. A lot of guys pull off selection courses because they are surprised by how hard it is.
2. Stop thinking about how far you have to go, or how many more you have to do. The more you fight something, the harder it gets and the tighter it grips that part of your brain telling you to stop.
3. Remaining logical and not panicing. No matter what is happening, the situation you're in always has a logical way out e.g. you're not lost , you're just temporarily off course and need to find a feature that will help you get back on course. You're lost when you panic and start walking in circles.
4. Be able to operate as an individual confidently. You're alone on selection, no one will give you encouragement. That transfers to real world ops, i.e. you might be asked to and do something alone so you have to be able to operate confidently alone.
5. Be able to operate as a team member just as well. So you have to be an expert loner and a good team player.
6. Don't quit. A lot of people quit selection because they believe they are not passing, when in fact they have been doing fine. Even if you're crawling up a hill because you're so exhausted, you haven't stopped, so in effect you haven't quit. Just because you're not winning everything, doesn't mean you're losing.

Get Selected in Mongolia...
Warrior-Mentor,
I thought you would appreciate the attached picture.
I'm currently in Mongolia, training with the MAF 150th PKU. I was reading my copy of your book during some down-time, and the SF Tab on the cover caught the eye of one of the Mongolian officers, LT Myagmardorj. He attended the US Army OCS and is very fascinated with SF. He is part of the UN peacekeeping force deploying to Iraq very soon.

The Book
I received my book on Tuesday. It is a very good read and I found the information to be prodigious. My wife had the package opened and the book on my desk when I got home from work that night.
I will be reading it again as the months get closer to this experience. The wisdom is priceless coming from BTDT guys of this caliber.
Thank you for posting the link.
Back to lurking.

Engineer Tape?
In Appendix A (the 30 days to success) on Day 28 the homework says to "get engineer tape sewn onto uniforms based on SFAS SOP."
So...couple of questions on behalf of the guy frantically packing (on day 28 ) in my household...
If one doesn't show up with engineer tape sewn onto his uniforms is this bad? On the packing list itself it doesn't say to have it sewn on.
He's in the process of trying to rustle some up, but even if he does that begs the question of - what is the SFAS SOP for sewing it on? Clearly he doesn't want to show up with it done wrong and I can guarantee there isn't a shop at Huachuca that knows how to do it without detailed instructions. It is different for BDUs and ACUs? He's bringing both.
I've searched the heck out of this board and anything else we can find, but we've come up empty. I figure since the author of the book posts here as well as a number of recent SFAS guys this might yield some informed answers. If the answers would be too much of a hijack, please PM me.
Thanks!!

IIRC, if it isn't sewn on, and properly, his sewing skills will be tested soon after arrival, normally at a time when he would prefer to be doing something else.
I would find a shop and have them do their best effort.

Engineer tape
Your'e given the SOP ahead of time, so take advantage of that and get them sewn up. Once you arrive to SFAS, the last thing you want to worry about is sewing uniforms.

Exactly. It doesn't count against you...it's just something that has to get done...and it's a pain to do it by hand. So if you can it it done before you show up, it make life just a little easier.

Returned from Mountain Warfare school this weekend to find my copy waiting for me. Got halfway through it last night - what a collection of great info, even if you're not going to SFAS. And, with the proceeds going to the Warrior Found... come on, it's a win-win!
WM, thank you sir for a fine read, great advice, and generousity that's too uncommon these days.
