Police Stops
Well, have two first hand accounts of a police check point being set up a mile from my house. DEA, Local Police, Sheriff, DHS, and an unmarked. Stopping everyone and asking where they are going, what they are doing and who they are. To include minivan soccer moms with infants. One woman was told to open her windows so the officer could put his head inside (above the infant in car seat) then demanded to know why she came back through the check point after having gone through it from the other direction. (home to town and home again)
Second report was from Northern neighbor that said his encounter was less questioning than the woman's, since when asked where he was going he said 'West'. The officer responded with 'fine' then told him to move along.
Nothing visible in news.
Location was about 10 miles South of Lake Ontario about 70 miles East of Niagra Falls in Western NY.
Almost feels East block-ish.
We have a yearly State Police road check point, to check peoples Inspection stickers and registration. This was more invasive.

I hope you have your "papers".
When I get into one of those "stops" it will make news I promise.

Operation Stonegarden was federally funded

ALBION, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Orleans County Sheriff's Dept. has apprehended four suspected illegal aliens. One of the men is identified as a fugitive.
Juan C. Contreras-Mendez, 29, of Monroe County, was arrested on the fugitive warrant and turned over to immigration officials. The three others arrested were undocumented aliens, who were also turned over to immigration officials.
The Batavia Daily News reports the bust was dubbed Operation Stonegarden and operated from a detail on Ridge Road (Route 104) in Gaines. The operation involved a traffic stop that also resulted in tickets for traffic violations and other offenses. The program was federally funded through a grant from the Department of Homeland Security which is focusing on enforcement preparedness along U.S. borders.
Orleans County sheriff’s deputies were joined by other agencies participating in the detail included state Environmental Conservation Law Enforcement, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

I guess simply driving to the 'known' large farms in the area and picking up the illegals would be inappropriate. Or checking the vans filled with migrant workers at Walmart.

They have to stop everyone in a general checkpoint ("ahl veektims ahr eqval, nun ist more eqval den zeh udders") otherwise they're not supported in case law. Different states have different "standing mute" laws too, so pick your battles. That said, mine wouldn't end up a routine stop having seen this stuff for real & already drawn the line. Federally-funded so everyone wants to play; get the peasants in areas other than the SW "used to it" to build complacency.
They could up their bust count just by hitting most any Walmart at 0300 and vacuum up the tweakers.
JJ_BPK: Fascinating & inspiring. I've gotta get down there now. "The Mouse That Roared" parallel was too good.

Wonder what the reaction would be if this type of behavior increases.

I've heard that works to get an opposing lineman to jump offsides...
I thought Vopos always had an inferiority complex; s'pose the old demand to see a Soviet officer wouldn't play so well.

police stops
I have been stopped twice in Mississippi by the state highway patrol when I was going exactly the speed limit on I-20. Turns out older white guys with out of state plates driving exactly the speed limit fit the profile of drug transporters.
They were very polite and I had no trouble with it at all. Felt like in some small way I was helping keep drugs away from kids.

I went though one of those check points in Yuma while travelling from YPG to Eloy. Just a quick check since I had a rental car with out of state plates and I was on my way.
I've been stopped while TDY by the Police and usually when I have out of state plates on my rental car. Now my first question when I rent a car is "is it out of state plates?" if so, I have them change it.

Am I being detained? Am I free to go? I am not required by law to answer your questions. Am I free to go? Am I being detained? What's your name? What's your badge number? Under what authority are you stopping me? Am I free to go?
