Our Wally-World is in Florida City, 100+ miles, so we don't get to go to often.
BUT, I could swear they have always had ammo & rifles ?? I often stop on the way off the rock to pick up range ammo.
??
I have a similar problem, in that there are few gun shops down here in the Keys,, and they think their guns are gold plated and want outrageous prices..
So I started looking online..
You might want to look at http://www.gunbroker.com/
I have purchased a couple guns there and the process is not to complicated.
Another place is the AR15 equipment exchange. You can search by state, so there is a chance you can drive to the seller and pick up the weapon without using a gun shop to do the transfer..
http://ee.ar15.com/Default.aspx
If the gun seller does not live in your state, You do need a local gun shop to handle the transfer papers. They charge between 20-50 $$. Also, most sellers charge a couple bucks to ship the gun.
Also, there are online gun shops that handle police trade-ins. They can be a real bargains..
If you take your time you can get good value by buying used from private sellers online.

Guns and Ammo
The Guns and Ammo area of the Sporting Goods Section in Fayetteville Wal-Marts has been getting smaller and smaller over the years. Very, very, very limited selection.
Gander Mountain and Dick's is starting to pull good walk-in crowds.

I have a Wal-Mart close by that sells all sorts of guns and ammo. Their online selection is even better!!!!!
Then again this is Arizona, and we have a "State Gun".

Big Teddy,
Our Wal-mart sells ammo, and long guns. No hand guns yet. The prices are the best in the area. My most recent purchase was a Remington Model 770, 30-06 with 9x Bushnell scope mounted for just under $300.00. For ammo, the prices are the best in the area. I show up early on Wednesdays to get the ammo; after that the shelves empty pretty quickly.
Be well Amigo!

Walmart quit selling rifles and shotguns here in Southern California about 5 or 6 years ago. The employees were having problems completing the required paperwork. Fortunately, my son and I bought Winchester Model 70's for about $300.00 before they stopped. Great buys and both of us use them when hunting pigs. Great buys, really good shooting rifles...

Went thru the process here at the local WM a year or two ago.
Very limited selection, took several times longer than at the local gun stores, the employee had to walk thru a multi-page book with directions, and an assistant manager had to escort me to the door with the purchase.
Price was right, though. Probably a break even with the cost and the time spent.

I've bought guns at Wal Mart before and had them escort the unloader rifle/shotgun out, even thou I had my opened carried 1911 cocked and locked on. The one near the beach where I now live still sells long guns and ammo. Would be interesting if they sell handguns when I get home.
