He used an OTC iodine tablet, waited 30 minutes and then drank it.

The story from the link I just posted states that his office states that he's "Okay and is not suffering from the Animas trots."

Sure, taking a single drink isn't going to harm you right off, it's the continued drinking and irrigational use that will cause health issues.

In keeping with the focus (sort of ) of this thread:

Quote:
Last Sunday morning, over 300,000 pounds worth of toxic gas was accidentally released into the air at the Deer Park Shell Oil facility.
According to reports from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the emission hazard in Southeastern Texas was occurred at approximately 10:40 am at the Shell Deer Park site. Operating personnel discovered the leak roughly 15 minutes later. The Houston Chronicle reported that 326,166 pounds of butadiene escaped through an open valve on a spherical tank between 10:40 am and 11:35 am.
“This release is huge,” stated Sierra Club of Texas chemist Neil Carman to the Chronicle. “Even 10 percent of 326,000 is big for butadiene.”
Carman, who was also a former power plant inspector for the TCEQ, said that butadiene is a known human carcinogen. However, he noted that its molecular structure allows it to dissipate quickly in the hot summer air. The chemical is commonly expelled in car exhaust, but Carman said the quantity in the Shell incident was concerning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that long-term exposure to butadiene is linked to increased risks of cardiovascular disease and leukemia.
Shell spokesperson Ray Fisher said the company is investigating the cause of the release. Meanwhile, data from nearby monitors did not exceed TCEQ odor or health-based screening levels during the incident.
“To the best of our knowledge, there were no adverse impacts on the community,” Fisher said.

Glad to hear that an iodine tab can kill heavy metal deposits and other toxins.

Shhh!

Let Hickenlooper find out the hard way.

Way to take one for the team, Gov!

We are approaching a learning moment here and it seems an analogy for government is forming also.

How to get heavy metals and toxins out of your drinking water.....of all the options the Governor chose iodine.

Seems like the EPA was fining the owner of the Gold King mine heavily, $35,000.00 a day, because the owner wouldn't let the EPA in.

The owner finally caved in and let them in ...

Chicago politics at it's finest.

Owner Of Gold King Mine In ‘Disbelief’ At Spill Caused By EPA

DENVER (CBS4) – Three million gallons of contaminated waste poured into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine when the Environmental Protection Agency accidentally breached a dam.

The owner of the mine spoke exclusively with CBS4 about the toxic disaster.

Todd Hennis said he wanted to keep the EPA out of his mine, but got fined until he let them in. Four years later, toxic water came gushing out of Gold King and into the Animas River.

“I stood before this portal July 13 and could not tell that there was a huge quantity of water backed up behind it,” said Hennis.

What happened last week was not expected even by the Gold King Mine’s owner.

“Disbelief. Just utter devastation. A little bit of incomprehension when I first saw the pictures last Thursday,” Hennis said.

He claims the water did not originate with the Gold King, but seeped into it from an adjacent mine, the Sunnyside. Its owners deny any responsibility.

Hennis did not want to give the EPA access to investigate the leakage from his mine, but said the organization fined him daily.

“When you are a small guy and you’re having a $35,000 a day fine against you, have to throw up the white flag,” he said.

When the EPA opened it up, millions of gallons of waste were projected from inside, affecting the Animas River and all who benefit from it.

“My heart goes out to them Rick, because I’ve operated a tourist business in Silverton. It’s a short season, 100 days at best,” Hennis said.

He is coming forward to say this could have been avoided if the EPA and adjacent mine had acted on his requests.

“I had initial hesitation in going public with this, with visions of mobs, pitchforks and torches,” Hennis said.

But now he is grateful that the EPA has taken full responsibility for this environmental nightmare.

Hennis cautions that if this spill seems bad, there are other mines nearby that could be a thousand times worse when one of them has a blowout.

We were briefed by the EPA as part of Engineer BOLC. I took two things away from that brief:

1) they (at least the Leonard Wood EPA reps) are self-important garbage, and
2) they exist for one sole purpose - revenue generation.

There was little focus on actual environmental impact, but they could cite from rote memory the infractions, associated fines, and the easiest ways to show up at a site and run up the bill.

I'm not the least bit surprised that their immediate reaction was to start fining the owner. Coercion and revenue generation to advance a political agenda? And we can ask for a bigger budget when we fuck it up? Consider it done...

SUPERFUND SNEAK: Why EPA Chief Gina McCarthy Can’t Be Trusted

EPA Chief Gina McCarthy couldn’t be bothered to make the 55-mile trek from Durango Wednesday to tour the damage her agency caused at the Silverton mine.

She claimed that she was needed in Durango to consult with her EPA minions and Colorado officials, although it turns out that she refused to even meet with the attorneys general of Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.

She also refused to grant an audience with concerned members of the public, and instead held a ten minute press conference during which she declined to release water testing data, tell us if sediment had been tested, or explain why it took her agency 24 hours to notify downstream water users that a tidal wave of arsenic, lead, cadmium, iron, copper and manganese was headed their way.

It took McCarthy six days to speak publicly about the EPA-caused disaster, and her boss, President Obama, still refuses to address his administration’s blunder.

That vile topic of “Superfund” was not broached in Colorado. She saved that pitch for her New Mexico audience today, signaling that the entire upper Animas River watershed was in the EPA’s Superfund sights.

There’s been no update on the total spill, although if we take the EPA’s word that it was leaking 700 gallons a minute until Sunday, then continued to leak 500 gallons a minute, we’re looking at nearly seven million gallons that has splashed across 100 miles and three states. We suspect they’re not being truthful about that, either.

Coloradans were told to fill out claim reports for damages to recover losses, but McCarthy took a $50,000 check to Farmington today to help supply water for crop irrigation and livestock.

Meanwhile, Gov. Hickenlooper actually pitched in $500,000 of our tax dollars for the emergency, and that was before his idiotic press stunt, sipping Animas River water laced with iodine.

Ryan Flynn, New Mexico’s environment secretary, totally nailed Hickenlooper for the moronic move calling it a “reckless and irresponsible act by a public official.”

“He might as well stick 15 cigarettes in his mouth and light them all at the same time and take a picture about how that’s good for you.”

As of this afternoon, and more than a week after the spill, McCarthy again refused to release the water quality data to the public.

However, McCarthy said she was scheduled to brief President Obama tomorrow.

Not on the actual spill, but as to how the Indian tribes have been treated. Not very well, we suspect, as the Navajo nation has advised their members to tear up the EPA claim forms for fear it absolves the administration of complete liability.

And in the face of all this, McCarthy insisted today that her agency was being held to the exact same standards of any private company charged with polluting two rivers. And possibly a lake. In three states.

It would be laughable, if it all weren’t so tragic.
