Magazine repair
30-round magazines are illegal in CA unless you bought them pre-ban. I have 5 thermal mags I got before the ban for my AR. They all suck. I have misfeeds practically every other round. Is this something that some genius 18B-type might be able to fix? Any suggestions for someone I can send them to for repair/upgrade/whatever? CA would be nice, but these would be easy to ship back and forth to any location I would think.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice. Oh, and I know it would be easier to live in a different state from a firearms regulation standpoint so save your breath.

I assume you mean "thermold" magazines? If so, they were notorious back in the day for not working so well. I would possibly order some Magpul followers and some GI springs.
Also, if I am not mistaken you can still get new ones on the market for a reasonable price (Sportsmansguide) has them. I believe that if the magazines were sent to you disassembled as "repair parts" then you could rebuild or fix the ones that you have.
Another option is come over to AZ or NV when they have gun shows and look for some non-marked pre-ban magazines.

Concur.
You are trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Next time you travel out of state, procure "replacement" PMags and destroy the Thermolds.

Thermold magazines are the reason MAGPUL spent YEARS proving that plastic magazines could be reliable. Preban military magazines are relatively easy to find in decent shape at gunshows outside the People's Workers Paradise Free Green State Democratic Socialist Republic of Kalifornication and in your case worth "acquiring/refurbishing".

I do not believe it is legal to acquire preban magazines from others -- you have to have bought them yourself before the ban, so these 5 are all I can get. There may be some loopholes, though. In the meantime, sounds like I just need to go with 10 rounders.

Not a problem, once the zombie apocalypse starts gather up all your "ten" rounders and fight your way to my location.

The only "loophole" that I'm aware of, is that you can rebuild one 100%. You just can't build a new (additional) one. (There may be a loophole in that loophole, though. )

Just curious...
Since this "Ban" have you had to "Register" you magazines? If not who's tracking when and where you get them or how many you have?
Doesn't sound like a very enforceable law, unless you get searched and not have 'Receipts' for preban items. (or a better explanation as to what part of the word "INFRINGED"can be excused from the 2nd Amendment.
Screw it, here I go again....

I've often thought the very same thing....I'm sure there are cases and cases of pre-ban mags out there just waiting for a buyer.....

No, and nobody.
Here's an analysis and discussion on CALGUNS.net: http://calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=124709
Quote:
Proof of a crime, however, is likely going to be difficult.
Magazines are not usually serialized or dated
Before 2000, no one would have anticipated this law, so there was no reason to retain receipts for magazine purchases
Not all guns in California are registered or otherwise known to the California Department of Justice, so the corresponding knowledge of likely date of possession of magazines for the guns is also missing

Just to be safe, though, I took mine apart and reassemble them when needed.

Not to deviate from the original forum here so please forgive me.
I once had to ship a handgun to California for a person who bought a revolver from me. There were so many things that needed to go on that it took me three days to get it ready to ship. It had to be shipped a certain way, if not California Law Enforcement would actually fly over to my place to arrest me and extradite me back to California?
Bottom line I will never do that again, period.
This sound like the process, RL?
