FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, July 26, 2005) — An Army Special Forces Soldier stationed here died July 23 near Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Jason T. Palmerton, 25, a communications sergeant, assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) here, died from wounds sustained during combat operations while on patrol near Qal’eh-Ye Gaz.

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in June 2005.

A native of Hamburg, Iowa, Palmerton enlisted in the Army July 31, 2002 as an infantryman with the option to become a Special Forces Soldier.

He arrived to Fort Bragg at the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) in January 2003 to begin the intense training it would take for him to become a Special Forces communications sergeant.

Palmerton was assigned to 3rd SFG in February 2005.

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Basic Parachutist Badge, and the Special Forces Tab. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with V device, the Purple Heart, a Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

His mother, Denise K. Brown of Auburn, Neb., father, Steve Palmerton; his sisters Amanda and Beth; and his fiancee, Shelly, survive him.
