DOD approves added pay for troops in some African nations

Some good news

"Fort Bragg soldiers who have served in parts of Africa over much of the past year — including the families of four soldiers killed in Niger in October — are now eligible for additional pay, according to the Department of Defense.

The soldiers are eligible for an additional $225 a month — the same amount received by troops deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries deemed as dangerous environments by the military.

The undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, Robert Wilkie, announced the change in a memo dated March 5.

Wilkie, a Fayetteville native, wrote that troops who have served in Mali, Niger and the north and far north regions of Cameroon since June 7 are eligible for back pay under the new rules.

The 3rd Special Forces Group has an enduring presence in Africa, where its soldiers work closely with allied partners to build their militaries and combat terrorism......."
