Youth season

I had the opportunity to take this young man hunting this weekend during Missouri's spring youth turkey season. Fantastic hunt. Had two nice gobblers strutting in a field just out of range for about 15 minutes, hens running everywhere. Beautiful morning, turkeys gobbling in every direction. This gobbler was a couple years old, weighed 22lbs, 10-inch beard.

Birds kind of hung up in the field, so I had the kid low-crawl (which he did incorrectly, but we will work on that later) up to the edge of a field. He put the barrel of the shotgun on a small stump. He was shaking so bad that I could hear the barrel squeaking on the stump.

I loaded up my benelli with an Indian Creek choke tube, #6 shot, 3 1/2 inch magnums. The kid shoots on a trap team, but I was still a little worried that this was a lot of gun. He said that he didn't even feel the gun kick when he tripped the trigger.

He had just lost a parent about 8 weeks ago. I will never forget this hunt.
