Man charged in weekend hit-and-run
A staff report
Police charged a Fayetteville man this afternoon with leaving the scene of a fatal crash on Raeford Road on Sunday.
McCartha Hawkins, 60, of the 5700 block of Aftonshire Street, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failing to yield the right of way and felony hit and run, according to arrest warrants.
Hawkins is accused of pulling out from Revere Street onto Raeford Road and into the path of a northbound motorcycle operated by Victor Jose Sencion, a 30-year-old soldier whose address was not known.
The impact threw Sencion off the motorcycle and into the path of the truck, police said.
Hawkins kept going after the impact but police did not say why he failed to stop.
Sencion was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The accident happened at 2:30 p.m. near the Time-Warner Cablevision office, police said.
Hawkins’ bail was set at $5,000.
