82nd...

Guys, Ive heard this from at least to kids in the 82nd. They tell me that in a few years if not sooner, they will become "Air Assualt" just like the 101st. Does anybody now if this is true or not?

I remember when I was in the "eighty douce" and my buddy was in the 101st. He said I was "almost airborne"(AA) and I referred that he was in the "pukin' buzzards".... That was just after they reactivated the division to "airborne status in 1956"... .(Richard will correct me if I'm wrong on this date.) Anyway, It is sad that "Jump Wings" may become obsolete, replaced by "air assault wings"(no disrespect),but............

No more thigh slappin' points of instruction for future troopers in the 82nd airplane gang? Have to see it to believe it!

It'll be a sad day. Kinda like when the cavalry got rid of their horses.

May be scaled back just a tad.
Or turned into an amusement park.

Guess they fell they can handle most stuff with 173d and Rangers when it comes to airborne operations. Will be interesting to see if they do it.

The 101st is the largest and most expensive division in the US Army.

I seriously doubt there is going to be sufficient room in the military budget to buy the equipment to duplicate it, or the desire to eliminate our only forced entry division.

Sounds like an outhouse rumor to me.

They also told me that some hire ups say that it is safer for Rangers and SF to parachute into harms way rather than the "large" 82nd division which would be better suited for "Air Assualt". We will just have to wait and see I guess.
