"It sends a message that nobody is above the law," defence lawyer Lt.-Col. Troy Sweet said after the fine, proposed jointly by defence and prosecution, was accepted by Judge Mario Dutil.
Brig.-Gen. Menard, who told reporters he was trying to put the weapon on safety when he fired two rounds, was at Kandahar Airfield preparing to board a helicopter with chief of defence staff Gen. Walt Natynczyk at the time of the March 25 incident.

whoah..... when he fired TWO rounds?! how do you confuse your safety with independently pulling the trigger twice?!

Some of the early Cx family had a 3rd burst mode, but I think that was eliminated on the C8. The Cx family are derivatives of the Colt AR family..
If he was fumbling around with the safety, he could have "limp wrist" a couple rounds..

His story does not track with the physical controls of the weapon, and no rounds should have been chambered while still on the airfield.
The selector switch is manipulated with the thumb, the trigger with the index finger.
How would a guy who has been in the Army that long confuse the two?

Maybe he had his trigger finger on the trigger while he tried to flip the safty? First round going off caused him to jolt and fire the second one.
Well the good side of this is he didn't kill a private just standing there doing his job.
