PRESS RELEASE: Special Forces Soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT LEWIS, Wash. (USASOC News Service, Feb. 3, 2010) – A U.S. Special Forces Soldier was killed when an improvised explosive device exploded during a patrol Jan. 28 in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Rusty Hunter Christian, 24, was assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) headquartered at Fort Lewis, Wash. He was a Special Forces engineer sergeant.

This was Christian’s first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. He was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Christian is survived by his wife, Amber two children of Orting, Wash. He is also survived by his mother Donna Ball and stepfather Jim Ball of Kingsport, Tenn; his father, Michael Christian of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.; and his brother Aaron Christian also of Kingsport.

SSG Christian deployed in 2006-07 with my current company but left before I got here so I never met him. There are many here who mourn his loss and remember when.
