DC traffic....Reno quake

Fox News is now reporting ,1020 EDT:

1. Truck drivers are reported to be protesting the cost of fuel today. The plan reported by FOX is to shut down roads in and around DC. If you travel near DC today expect delays. My wife is traveling from DE to Shen Valley later today. I am sending her South on 301 which runs N-S East of the 495 Beltway, then East of I-95 thru Va right thru Ft. AP Hill.

2. USGS is predicting strong earthquake within the next 24 hrs near Reno, Nevada. Fox goes on to report that a 6.0 would not suprise the USGS. Folks around Reno have been advised to evacuate!

Interesting...I live 30 miles SE of Reno and work in SE Reno...no evacuation order has been pronounced, to my knowledge...I work for a civil engineering firm and we tend to keep up with stuff like that...we have had a series of tremblers in the area over the last couple months, beginning, most notably, after the 6.5 quake hit Wells in February...anyone living near the Sierra Nevada should be aware of the probability of an earthquake, but I am not convinced that USGS or anyone else can predict a seismic event with a 24 hour time frame...certainly, the swarm of minor quakes we've had is indicative of activity, but the geologists I work with (and I have a degree in Geology, as well) are divided as to whether it's an indicator of an impending big one or if these small quakes are releaving stress that might cause the big one...

I'll check back in tomorrow...maybe..

SF BHT,

I guess well see. I've never heard of a prediction like this outside of volcanic predictions. From what FOX related, it was not a test.

lksteve,

FOX news broadcast a "Reno" resident relating that there were TV/Media broadcasts suggesting evac. I'm not there. As with the DC traffic, all I know is what I hear, FOX News is usually prettry accurate. I believe you over news broadcasts!

Thanks guys.
Stay safe!

Well, if we evacuated, I feel cheated...I've been at work since 0630 PDT and didn't get to go home...there was a 4.2 this morning at 0-dark early (0433 PDT, to be exact) and there were a total of 3 in the 24 hour period ending at 10 PDT today...the range was 2.5 to 4.2 on the Richter scale...very consistent with recent seismic activity, and truth be told, it could be indicative of something more substantial...that said, if you go to the USGS website, you will notice that there is no link for "Earthquake Predictions"...you can report seismic activity on their website, you can view recent seismic activity, but if you want an earthquake prediction, you need a Oueja board, tarot cards and a coffee can full of chicken guts...scientifically speaking, that is....

I get USGS realtime postings, and you are right; their site is a history lesson. It is nearly unheard of for USGS to " predict" quakes, in fact I've never heard of it before. USGS has a neat Google Earth interface that takes some time to load, but worth the wait.

If you were less valuable, "they" might let you know of an evac.

Strange that there was an earthquake conference going on in Seattle at the time all this has occurred....
