For people coming into the area here are two web sites.

Fayetteville Police http://police.ci.fayetteville.nc.us

Cumberland County http://www.ccsonc.org

You can search both for crime statistics and locations. Fayettville's is map based and user easy. The County takes a little more knowledge of the local area.

More knowledge is never a bad thing.

Heard good advice on this. When deciding on what neighborhood to live in. Park on the street and just watch. You can determine the average age of the kids living there. Make sure gang bangers don't use the street corner at night. You can tell a lot by just watching.
Or you can rent/buy a house with some land around it. Start your own little neighborhood.

Keith makes a good point...statistics from a website don't tend to tell the whole picture. A crappy neighborhood may have fewer calls than one expects, simply because the people living there are used to a certain level of criminal activity and accept it as a part of life. A nice quiet neighborhood may have a lot of "nuisance" type calls, simply because they have a very low tolerance for anything out of the ordinary. Let a black man even think about walking down the street in my one nice neighborhood, and I've got six prowler calls holding. Meanwhile I've got houses being shot up in the hood and nobody bothers to call. We find out two weeks later when the retaliation hit actually pings somebody and they say, "oh yeah, a couple of weeks ago..." It's best to check personally with an officer who works the area.

Also scanners are good for keeping up with what's going on day to day.

You will need a trunked scanner for the Cumberland county area. Hard to do when just coming in but if you are renting looking to buy it's something nice to listen to.

When dealing with a Real Estate agent and they are driving you around ask them if the neighborhood has an active Neighborhood Watch.

Also US Data Sets, Census information. Good breakdown on other information.

After the the thread on DC. I started web searching schools in the Fay. area and found this website http://www.greatschools.net/. I was able to compare schools to each other Ie Test scores,teacher/student ratio,etc. wealth of info for those moving into an area with school age kids.

Looked through these site stats last night. The amazing thing to me was how many incidents occur on a daily basis in some parts of town.

Very good advice I use alot. I also get out and do a run through areas a few times to get even more perspective. The next move we'll be starting our own neighborhood.

Keep in mind that this isn't up to date...i.e. Village Christian Academy goes K-12 instead fo K-11.

One thing we learned was that private school education standards were higher than public schools here in NC. i.e. one of ours went from 8th grade public school to 9th grade at VCA and it took him a full year to catch up to where the others that were in VCA or out of state students coming into VCA. The next year his grades were near the top as he caught up with the rest of the class.
