Dark Matter Found??

Just reported today:

GENEVA (AP)—A $2 billion experiment on the International Space Station is on the verge of explaining one of the more mysterious building blocks of the universe: The dark matter that helps hold the cosmos together.

An international team of scientists says the cosmic ray detector has found the first hint of dark matter, which has never yet been directly observed.

The team said Wednesday its first results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, flown into space two years ago, show evidence of a new physics phenomena that could be the strange and unknown matter.

Nobel-winning physicist Samuel Ting, who leads the team at the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, says he expects a more conclusive answer within months. The findings are based on an excess of positrons—positively charged subatomic particles.

"This is an 80-year-old detective story and we are getting close to the end," said University of Chicago physicist Michael Turner, one of the giants in the field of dark matter. "This is a tantalizing clue and further results from AMS could finish the story."

Ha- I told ya Hawking was wrong - it is a closed universe

Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

Could we name it something that doesn't sound like it came out of a SciFi novel.

It's really cool to think that technology is getting to such a level that it is clearly accelerating "human advancement" and that we are so close to unlocking the secrets of the universe.

Meanwhile, back in the team room, I got two lines to run two computers for the whole team and it'll take a day and a half to get everyone's AT level I training certificate printed off; because that shit what due two days ago. And the heat didn't work all winter... Technology!!!!!

Not complaining about the post, its actually pretty cool because I'm partially a nerd. Just complaining about the technological disparieties that shouldn't exist

I'm with you on that one, Bro. I still got to call IT support to connect my laptop to the AV system. Only done this a thousand times and still can't connect the two

Then we can destroy it.

Love it if this was true. But the history of Dark Mater searches has been filled with false positives.

More skeptical take here

I am with you on that one Hoosier, I don't think you will find any state or local government office where the computer systems are no less than 4 years behind of the current technology. Look at our state government, every dept has it's own computer system that will not work with another departments. That' s crazy, sometimes I wonder if it was made like that on purpose.
